Fans of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto who are eagerly awaiting General Motors’ new full-size trucks for the 2027 model year might be thrilled to know both those services will be offered on the new Chevrolet and GMC pickups as they go on sale within the next three months. Those same fans were miffed three years ago when General Motors said it would phase out the popular smartphone integration in favor of native Google-based infotainment built into new vehicles.
But the General was listening to consumer grumbling as designers and engineers developed the crucial, money-making full-size truck. The popular systems are included in the new truck, and it seems there’s more CarPlay/Auto tomfoolery for the future.

One Size Fits All, Starting With Trucks
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (pictured above on ’27 Silverado) are merely two pieces of a completely new user interface and infotainment platform developed by GM to debut on the pickup trucks. But it’s way too expensive for automakers to introduce specific infotainment systems for specific vehicles. So they develop one scalable design and software platform that can be adapted and tailored for luxury Cadillac EVs, mainstream Buick crossovers, track-worthy C8 Corvettes, and GMC SUVs. One size fits all, with room for very different driver experiences.
Sure, there was a time some years ago when GM product developers considered their next-generation native infotainment platform to be superior, and that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were a source of confusion for many drivers who perhaps wanted to use smartphone integration, for instance, to let the Waze app provide route guidance while also using the native onboard system to simply change an FM radio station.
Will This Approach Make Everyone Happy?

That doesn’t sound like a major technology hurdle, but it could be while traveling at highway speeds with kids screaming in the back seat. So, as the new pickup trucks were in development, partly due to consumer feedback, the team focused on packaging that would allow the driver to see native functions alongside Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, all on one screen.
“We focus on where technology creates friction in everyday driving. What we heard was that people were hunting for controls, navigating through too many steps, and encountering interaction models that felt inconsistent. We used those insights to simplify the experience.”

Customers Disliked Moving ‘From Room to Room’
In the new light-duty trucks, General Motors has integrated the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto experience “more deeply than ever before,” said Michael Wahlstrom, GM’s executive director of software product management. “People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they’re so user-centric.”
And yet, GM saw room for improvement when integrating CarPlay and Android Auto, hinting that earlier iterations converted the main screen entirely to native infotainment or CarPlay/Android Auto, and that switching between them was like moving from room to room inside a house. “We heard from customers that they want that same simplicity while still having quick access to everything their vehicle can do,” Wahlstrom said. “Our next-gen UI brings those together in a cohesive way.”

Have No Fear: Buttons Are Here
The goal of the new user interface is to “remove the mental load for a driver to decide where to go next, which experience to use next. It’s much more intuitive and clean,” Wahlstrom said. That means “fewer taps; clearer visual, auditory and haptic feedback; more consistent interaction patterns; and better alignment between controls and outcomes.”
And yes, as you can see in the interior photos, the new Silverado and Sierra will retain hard buttons for audio and climate controls and for camera views. We know this user interface is about to be rolled out across GM brands because the company refers to “a shared design language to make the experience easier to understand across displays, vehicles, and brands.”

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
Automakers can’t make every car shopper happy with their product-development and technology decisions. The best they can do is to satisfy the majority, and in this case, it appears the majority still wanted to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Kudos to GM for focusing on improving the integration with the native infotainment architecture, so that maybe even the naysayers will find it easier to switch between each mode, when the new trucks come out.
Of course, this is assuming there are no software glitches to leave a consumer frustrated.
