At a quick glance, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 is my kind of car. It’s not too big, not too cushy, and not too slow. It has 443 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, though that satisfying symmetry is ruined by an “overboost” mode that bumps torque to 472 lb-ft when activated. Zero to 60 mph comes in just 4.0 seconds, and it’ll do 167 mph if you find yourself someplace with enough room. So what’s the catch?
AMG’s electrification process has been, well, a process. Its latest round of downsized performance hybrid models has drawn somewhat mixed reviews, charitably speaking. The punchy, long-roof E53 has been the best-received of the lot, and the GLC53 was clearly tuned to slot beneath it. But despite sharing more than a few powertrain components, the result is a mixed bag.
Cons
- Powertrain tuning feels odd. Very high-strung in sporty modes, almost timid otherwise. It’s always either trying too hard or not hard enough.
- Feels like a four-cylinder hot hatch, not a six-cylinder luxury SUV.
- It drives small but feels big. Body motions are slow, and revs climb quickly but offer little return unless you floor it.
- High hip point makes it feel tippy and narrow.
- It’s a hybrid (which isn’t a bad thing, but it doesn’t necessarily make it better in any particular way).
Pros
- This thing is seriously quick when you really wind it up. Say what you will about the company’s recent powertrain choices, but this thing doesn’t hurt on straight-line performance.
- It is genuinely quiet and refined. Credit goes to the inline-six here; it’s potent enough to do this work on its own if given the chance. The hybrid assist is just gravy.
- Tall ride height gives a commanding view of the road.
- Interior design is solid. Looks and feels like a taller C-Class equivalent, as the GLC should.
- The hatch design wasn’t completely compromised by the battery and AWD packaging, so you still get decent volume back there, but not as much as you’d get in a proper family SUV.
- It’s a hybrid.
Verdict
The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 feels like several different cars rolled into one. It can be quick, composed, and well-sorted, but those traits rarely overlap in a way that will feel satisfying to an enthusiast. This car checks a lot of boxes; I’m just not convinced they all belong on the same sheet, in the first place. If you disagree, hey, here’s your next car.
