Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs in the United States because of a potential fire risk tied to the engine compartment wiring harness. The recall covers certain 2021 through 2026 Bronco and Bronco Raptor models, making it one of the larger recent safety campaigns involving Ford’s reborn off-road SUV. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the concern centers on wiring that may become damaged and short circuit.
The issue is caused by insufficient abrasion protection on the engine compartment wiring harness. Over time, movement between the harness and nearby components can wear through the protective covering and expose internal wires. If those exposed wires short intermittently, they can create electrical arcing and potentially start a fire in the engine bay. Ford’s recall documents also note that drivers may notice smoke coming through the cabin air vents or see a warning message in the instrument cluster.
At the time the recall was filed, Ford was aware of 15 incidents that may have involved fires starting from the engine compartment wiring harness. The company has not indicated widespread injuries tied to the issue, but any fire-related recall deserves attention, especially on a vehicle like the Bronco that owners may use far from paved roads or service facilities. This recall applies to the Bronco and Bronco Raptor, not the smaller Bronco Sport, which is a separate model on a different platform.
Ford’s fix is relatively straightforward. Dealers will add convolute sheathing with abrasion tape to the engine compartment wiring harness to protect it from chafing and reduce the risk of future short circuits. Dealer notifications have already begun, and Ford plans to notify owners between August 24 and August 28. Owners who are concerned their vehicle may be affected can check their VIN through the NHTSA recall website or contact a Ford dealer for confirmation.
