Ferrari May Be Teasing a Manual 12Cilindri and Enthusiasts Are Paying Attention : Automotive Addicts

Ferrari might be getting ready to give purists something they have been asking for since the brand walked away from three-pedal road cars. According to Autocar, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna recently told U.S. dealers in Las Vegas that the company would soon reveal “something new” that blends the past with the future, reportedly adding that they should “wait until the fourth of July.” That is not an official confirmation of a manual 12Cilindri, but for a company as carefully choreographed as Ferrari, it is exactly the kind of breadcrumb that gets collectors, dealers, and longtime enthusiasts leaning forward.

The timing is especially interesting because rumors of a stick-shift Ferrari 12Cilindri have been circulating for weeks, with some speculation pointing to a reveal around the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That window passed without a public debut, but the chatter did not fade. Instead, it gained new energy after CarBuzz spotted a Ferrari patent filing published on June 11 for what appears to be a gated manual-style gear selector. The patent reportedly describes a control setup for a gearbox, complete with an H-pattern layout and numbered gates, which sounds wonderfully old-school until you realize Ferrari may be using it to command a modern automated transmission rather than a traditional mechanical manual.

That may sound like cheating to some, but it could also be a very Ferrari solution to a very modern problem. A true manual gearbox would be difficult to integrate into today’s high-output, electronically managed supercars, especially with emissions, performance targets, and drivability expectations all pulling in different directions. A gated selector paired with an electronic clutch and automated gearbox could give drivers the theater of a classic Ferrari manual while preserving the speed and control of a contemporary transmission. Another reported patent involving an electronic clutch pedal adds even more fuel to the fire, suggesting Ferrari is at least exploring a way to bring the left leg back into the experience.

If the rumored car is indeed tied to the 12Cilindri, it would make a lot of emotional sense. The front-engine V12 Ferrari has always carried a certain romance, and the 12Cilindri already feels like a love letter to Maranello tradition in an era increasingly defined by hybrids and EVs. A limited-run version with a gated-style shifter would not just be a collector magnet, it would be a carefully packaged nostalgia bomb for buyers who still remember when a Ferrari cockpit was as much about rhythm and precision as raw speed. And yes, after the visual nightmare that many enthusiasts saw in the Ferrari Luce EV, maybe Maranello is looking for a little redemption by reminding everyone it still knows how to stir the soul. Reuters recently reported that the Luce has drawn a cool response from critics and investors, which only makes the timing of a more emotionally charged Ferrari reveal feel even more intriguing.

For now, Ferrari has not confirmed a manual 12Cilindri, a limited-edition variant, or exactly what Vigna was teasing for early July. Still, between the CEO’s comments, the patent filings, and the persistent rumors around a modern interpretation of the gated manual, there is enough smoke here to keep the Ferrari faithful watching closely. Whether it turns out to be a true manual, a clever electronic tribute, or something else entirely, the idea of Ferrari reconnecting with one of its most beloved driver interfaces is enough to make early July feel a lot more exciting.
