Dongfeng rolls out in-house developed 1,500-kW charger to rival BYD’s flash charger

    • Dongfeng has begun developing a next-generation ultra-fast charger integrated with energy storage, building a product matrix spanning 720 kW to 2.4 MW.
    • Chinese automakers are engaging in a new round of competition over charging speeds.

Dongfeng Motor has rolled out its first in-house developed ultra-high-power charging product, with a single-gun peak power of 1,500 kW, matching the highest mass-produced level currently available in China.

The Chinese state-owned automaker held a ceremony on July 29 at the Dongfeng Global Innovation Center to mark the roll-out of prototypes of a kilovolt e-drive and a megawatt ultra-fast charging pile, according to a company statement.

The charging pile is equipped with a 1.2 MW host unit and supports flexible cabinet pairing, allowing power to be expanded to 2.4 MW and above, Dongfeng said.

Peak current for a single gun is 1,500 A, covering an ultra-wide voltage platform of 150 V to 1,000 V, with overall unit efficiency of no less than 96.7 percent.

Dongfeng said it is among the industry’s first batch of Level 1 energy-efficiency high-power charging products following the implementation of China’s new energy-efficiency national standard GB 46519-2025.

The 1,500 kW single-gun output is on par with the second-generation flash charging pile that BYD (HKEX: 1211) unveiled on March 5. That product was billed at the time as the world’s most powerful mass-produced single-gun charger.

Dongfeng said it has started developing a next-generation ultra-fast charger integrated with energy storage, and will build a product matrix covering 720 kW to 2.4 MW that can be shared by passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles.

The iD5-300SN rolled out at the same event is the group’s first kilovolt e-drive product. It uses a 1,500 V-rated SiC power module, covers a voltage range of 450 V to 1,000 V, and delivers peak power of 300 kW.

The product is compatible with mainstream 800 V platforms and can be extended up to 1,200 V. Its power density is 30% higher than the previous generation, and its CLTC efficiency leads the industry, Dongfeng said.

The e-drive will power Dongfeng’s Mach powertrain lineup and support production of the first kilovolt model from the Epicland brand jointly developed with Huawei.

Chinese automakers are in a new round of competition over charging speed. The Hongqi brand under China FAW Group said on Tuesday that its newly developed ultra-fast charging battery goes from 10% to 70% SOC in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds.

BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery covers the same range in 5 minutes on a flash charging pile, and the company plans to build 20,000 flash charging stations in China by the end of 2026.

“We did a massive amount of cycle and reliability testing before turning it into a technology that can be installed in vehicles on a large scale.”
