Lincoln has quietly introduced an interesting new take on its Aviator luxury SUV, although American buyers shouldn’t get too excited just yet. A new plug-in hybrid model called the Lincoln Aviator EX8 has surfaced through regulatory filings in China, revealing a significantly different design and powertrain from the Aviator currently sold in the United States. Developed through Ford’s partnership with Chinese automaker Changan, the EX8 represents Lincoln’s latest effort to remain competitive in China’s rapidly evolving luxury SUV market. What immediately caught our attention, however, wasn’t necessarily its electrified powertrain but its noticeably updated styling. While this particular vehicle is expected to remain exclusive to China, it’s hard not to wonder whether we’re getting an early glimpse of some design elements that could eventually influence the next-generation Lincoln Aviator here in America.

The Aviator EX8 adopts a more upright, squared-off appearance that gives it a stronger resemblance to Lincoln’s larger Navigator. Its prominent rectangular grille features distinctive chrome accents, while a broad front fascia and relatively flat hood create a more commanding presence. The rear design is considerably cleaner, incorporating a full-width taillight arrangement that fits nicely with Lincoln’s current styling direction. Interestingly, the EX8 is nearly the same size as the American Aviator, although it’s slightly shorter and narrower while standing a bit taller. It also features available 21- and 22-inch wheels, along with a roof-mounted lidar sensor that suggests more advanced driver-assistance technology. Overall, we think the design looks rather handsome, bringing a little more visual substance to a vehicle that already has a reputation for understated luxury.

Underneath that new exterior is a plug-in hybrid system that takes a different approach from the Aviator Grand Touring once offered in the United States. Instead of the previous twin-turbocharged V6-based hybrid setup, the Chinese-market EX8 uses a Changan-developed 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 148 horsepower on its own. Electric motors provide additional propulsion, although their configuration and combined output have not yet been disclosed. The SUV also uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, but electric driving range and charging specifications remain unknown. Lincoln discontinued the plug-in hybrid Aviator in America after the 2023 model year, so seeing the nameplate return with an electrified powertrain is certainly intriguing. The EX8 is expected to make its formal debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this month before entering the Chinese market sometime in 2027.

As for what this means for Lincoln customers in the United States, we’d recommend taking the Chinese-market Aviator EX8 with a grain of salt when considering its potential influence on our next-generation model. Different markets have different expectations, and this vehicle was developed specifically with Chinese buyers and regulations in mind. There’s no indication that Lincoln plans to bring the EX8 itself to America, nor has the company confirmed that its styling or hybrid technology will carry over to a future U.S. Aviator. Still, automakers frequently share design themes across global product lines, so we wouldn’t be surprised if some of the EX8’s more upright styling and updated lighting details eventually find their way onto an American Lincoln SUV. Personally, we’d welcome a freshened Aviator with this kind of presence, especially if Lincoln also finds a way to bring back a compelling hybrid option. For now, though, this is simply an interesting look at what Lincoln is doing overseas, and perhaps a small preview of where the brand’s design language could be heading next.
