With modern short-bed pickups, a bed-extender is almost a must. There are multiple ways to build one of the enclosures that turn your open tailgate into some extra truck bed space, but now Toyota is working on a new one. CarBuzz has just found the patent for the company’s latest idea, which could revolutionize how you haul stuff that won’t quite fit in the bed.
The big tamale is that it won’t take up cargo space when you’re not using it.

In 2026, a typical pickup truck has a bed that’s just six feet long, and many are shorter. Much shorter if it’s a compact pickup. That’s great for fitting a massive crew cab into a truck that can still just about fit in a parking space, but horrible if you’re hauling 4×8 sheets or making a moderately sized Costco run.
Enter the truck bed extender. They’re usually tubular structures designed to pivot out and create a sort of cage over your tailgate. That way you can haul longer items and more cargo without it falling out of the back of the truck.
The problem is storage when you’re not using it, or when you need to haul even longer things. Tailgate bed extenders pivot in and out, so when it’s not on the tailgate, it’s a wall taking up space and bisecting the box. Removing it requires tools, so it is not a spur-of-the-moment operation.
How Does It Work?

Toyota’s invention is a bed extender that can fold and move. Instead of three or more simple tubes, this idea has more structure to it, including a large central brace section and attachment brackets with hinges on the truck bed.
Extenders normally rotate 180 degrees. This one could rotate 270 degrees. When it’s rotated all the way around, the face that was taking the place of the tailgate would sit flat against the floor of the truck’s bed.
Toyota would even put a small indent in the box floor, letting the extender sit flush with the rest of the bed. Since truck bed floors are normally corrugated, not flat, it would be largely the same as any other truck.
To make it even better, Toyota put pockets in the tailgate to fit the feet of the extender. These pockets would help keep the extender in place on rough terrain, under heavy acceleration, and in any other conditions where a conventional extender could move around and cause you to lose your cargo. Seems like a no-brainer to us.

Pickup trucks are getting bigger, but their beds are getting smaller. Since the bed is sort of the point of a truck, you can see why automakers might want to make them more accommodating without increasing the overall length of the truck.
Toyota’s new bed extender idea does just that, in a clever and more convenient way we’ve never seen before. It’s likely more user-friendly than GMC’s elaborate MultiPro tailgate setup, which does some of the same things.
It’s also interesting that the patent drawings don’t look like Toyota’s current Tacoma, Tundra, or HiLux. They appear to be based on the EPU concept truck, first shown in 2023 – a possible sign that the truck is coming to market sooner rather than later.
