Chevrolet’s Popular Model Y Rival Could Get A Major Makeover

Chevrolet may be dropping electrics like the Bolt and giving up on a new generation of its electric Silverado EV, but it’s not out of the plug-in game just yet. The automaker is working on a replacement for the Equinox EV already, and it could show up in less than two years.

A new report says that the Equinox will be new for 2029, and that it will get a platform that could make it better without jacking up the price.

GM’s Best-Selling EV Could Get Short Life, New Bones

According to a new report from Motor 1, Chevrolet is already working on a completely new Equinox EV, rather than the mid-cycle refresh that we’d expect it to get this year or next. The current EV uses GM’s BEV3 architecture, which was shared with the Blazer EV as well as multiple Cadillac and even Honda EVs.

The next-generation will move onto a brand-new EV architecture. The report calls it a rethink of how GM designs, engineers, and builds its affordable EVs as it looks to cut costs and improve the packaging of its vehicles.

GM is calling the new platform BEV-N, the report says. Though it might incorporate all the lessons GM has learned with its current crop of EVs, the company is keeping the details close.

Will New Platform Be As Amazingly Flexible?

BEV3 is a surprisingly flexible platform. Not only has it launched EVs ranging from the compact $35,000 to the house-priced and gigantic Cadillac Celestiq, it has supported front, rear, and all-wheel drive. For a short time, on the Chevrolet Blazer EV, it offered all three at once.

It’s not clear if the new platform will be as flexible, but it will likely see many of the same demands. GM operations in the US as well as China are likely to use the architecture, though Honda and Acura won’t be along for the ride this time.

The Equinox EV doesn’t get much attention, but it is a big deal for Chevrolet. With 57,954 units moved last year, the model was GM’s best-selling EV, though it was still well behind the 274,356 gas Equinox models moved. In the first half of 2026, the reborn and cheaper Bolt has eaten into that somewhat, but the Equinox EV has still moved 16,249 units as the company’s best-selling EV.

It feels like the Chevrolet Equinox EV has only been on sale for a minute, but the model is already older than it seems. First introduced in 2022, it was meant to go on sale in 2023, though it didn’t show up at dealers until early 2024. The report suggests that the replacement will be revealed in late 2028 and go on sale as a model year 2029, which would make it five years old when it is dropped. That’s a bit shorter than typical, but not by much.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

GM Supercharging Silverado EV, Equinox EV, and Blazer EVGeneral Motors

If GM continues to develop an all-new electric vehicle platform, that means it is probably going to keep its wide range of EVs on the market and likely even expand. The company’s current EV platform can handle almost any size of vehicle, and that’s not likely to change. GM is number two in US electric vehicle sales, and while that’s still a small piece of the overall pie, GM isn’t likely to want to give it up.

If a new Equinox EV arrives in 2028, expect a new Blazer EV not long after, as well as a new Cadillac Optiq and Vistiq, and possibly more vehicles in a hurry.

CarBuzz has reached out to GM for additional information. We will update this post if new details become available.
