    • Indonesia’s EV penetration has grown rapidly, surging to about 20% in the first quarter of 2026.

BYD (HKEX: 1211) has launched its DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology in Indonesia, initiating a more flexible product layout in the Southeast Asian country.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant introduced its DM technology to a local audience at an event held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on May 18, according to a statement on Thursday.

BYD has always adhered to a parallel technology route of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), meeting the diverse needs of different markets through a more comprehensive technological layout, including in the Indonesian market, said Liu Xueliang, a vice president of the company.

The introduction of DM technology means that BYD is no longer just offering single-energy products in Indonesia, but is starting to provide a more complete logic of mobility choices, said Eagle Zhao, general manager of BYD Indonesia.

This allows users to no longer have to compromise between urban commuting and long-distance travel, Zhao said.

The first BYD model equipped with DM technology in Indonesia is the M6 DM, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that is not available in China.

BYD launched its fifth-generation DM technology in its home market of China in May 2024, which allows vehicles to consume as little as 2.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers at a low state of charge.

With a full tank of fuel and a full charge, the comprehensive range of the vehicles can reach up to 2,100 kilometers.

BYD’s passenger vehicle business officially entered the Indonesian market in January 2024, and the market now has a fleet of about 90,000 BYD NEVs.

Supported by government policies, Indonesia’s EV penetration rate has surged from less than 1% in 2022 to about 20% in the first quarter of 2026, BYD’s statement noted.

Indonesia’s vast territory and the ongoing development of its charging infrastructure give hybrid models a high degree of market adaptability.

Prior to the introduction of this hybrid technology, BYD had already launched six battery electric vehicle (BEV) models in Indonesia.

The sales milestone comes as BYD faces production delays and capacity struggles due to its second-generation Blade Battery technology upgrade.
