BMW is recalling 29,119 plug-in hybrid sedans in the United States over a potential fire risk tied to the engine starter relay. The recall affects certain 2016 to 2018 BMW 330e iPerformance, 2018 to 2020 BMW 530e iPerformance and 530e xDrive, and 2017 to 2019 BMW 740Le xDrive models. While fire-related EV and hybrid recalls often bring attention to high-voltage battery systems, that is not the issue here.

According to recall documents, water can enter the engine starter relay and cause corrosion. That corrosion may lead to a short circuit and overheating of the starter assembly, creating a fire risk even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. Because of that possibility, owners of affected vehicles are being advised to park outside and away from structures until the repair is completed.

BMW says it has not received reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue. The recall follows a larger campaign from last year involving nearly 200,000 BMW vehicles with a similar starter relay concern. Plug-in hybrid models were evaluated during that earlier action but were not included at the time. After continued monitoring and a field incident involving a 2017 3-Series plug-in hybrid in February 2026, BMW decided to issue this separate recall.

The fix is straightforward for owners once parts are available. BMW dealers will replace the engine starter assembly free of charge, and owner notification letters are expected to begin going out on August 28, 2026. Owners can also check their vehicle’s recall status through BMW’s recall lookup tool or by contacting BMW customer service with their VIN. Until then, the key advice is simple: if your BMW plug-in hybrid is included in this recall, park it outside until the repair is done.
