Something worth knowing about the term “horsepower” is that it was always a marketing gimmick. Over 200 years ago, Scottish inventor James Watt coined the term to sell his steam engines, bragging that they promised more power than a team of draft horses. The name has stuck ever since. This isn’t to say that horsepower is not a useful unit of measurement, only that its purpose has always been, first and foremost, to sell engines. So it’s not that surprising that Porsche and the German government aren’t seeing eye to eye on the Porsche Taycan. Porsche Says 1,093 Horsepower, Germany…
The Drive 🤝 your inbox. Every weekday The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture. Does it feel like everybody speeds these days? Depending on where you live, that observation may be accurate. A speed camera pilot program set to be implemented in Malibu this fall has been delayed after a 10-day trial conducted in September resulted in approximately 100,000 recorded speeding infractions. Look, we’re not saying speed limits are meaningless, buuuuuut… According to KTLA, Malibu officials released a statement saying that the city has delayed a warning period…
The Lexus GX is an SUV with real off-road heritage. It’s closely related to the American Toyota Land Cruiser, which is known in other markets as the Land Cruiser Prado. It uses body-on-frame construction, and it has a four-wheel-drive system with a low range in the transfer case. It’s just that it takes all that and adds an even more powerful twin-turbo V6, and a luxurious cabin. Naturally, aftermarket companies (and even Lexus itself) have set about enhancing that capability. Truthfully, though, most Lexus GX models will rarely, if ever, see dirt, so a Japanese tuner called Novel decided to…
By Jim Evans – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=94231487 The US is planning a lot more gas power – and data centers are the culprit. Proposed grid-connected gas capacity has nearly tripled since early 2023, while plans for new wind power are shrinking. A new analysis and interactive map from Environment America Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group puts the planned gas buildout at 60.4 gigawatts (GW) through the end of 2030. That’s up 44% from the 41.8 GW expected in December 2025, based on filings submitted to the federal Energy Information Administration (EIA). For perspective, that proposed…
The results have been expected for weeks, although until now OpenAI had not provided details about which problems the model had solved or exactly when they would be published. In September, the company said its model had “resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics.” The released papers and other details also include some summaries of the model’s reasoning, estimates of the compute used, and stats about the number of problems attempted. OpenAI claims the “average result” used the equivalent of three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.AGMAI, or the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence,…
In the world of supercars, horsepower is often the defining metric. And this may be why Ferrari has spent the last few years tinkering with electricity to see how many horses that can help generate. Its 296 GTB pairs an electric motor with a twin-turbo V6 to produce 819 hp, and the harder-edged 296 Speciale raises the combined figure to 868 hp. But the most extreme member of the 296 family takes a different approach. It doesn’t have a hybrid at all, but it’s faster around Ferrari’s test track, which raises the question of whether outright horsepower should be the…
Automotive Rivian just turned in one of its strongest quarters yet, but you would not know it from the stock market’s reaction. The electric vehicle maker delivered 19,248 vehicles during the third quarter of 2026, up roughly 46 percent from the 13,201 vehicles delivered during the same period last year. That was also enough to beat Wall Street expectations of around 18,000 deliveries. Rivian produced 19,751 vehicles during the quarter, making the results another encouraging sign that the company’s push toward higher volume is beginning to take shape. Much of that momentum is tied to the Rivian R2,…
Spam calls should be a bygone concern, but unfortunately they’re still a plague many of us deal with. Services like Truecaller have helped with caller identification and spam filtering for years. But since Android and iOS have gotten great at handling spam calls on their own, you don’t need to rely on a third-party app — much less pay a subscription — to avoid unwanted callers. In addition to functions on your phone, your carrier may offer its own spam protection features. Depending on the company, these might be enabled by default. If not, check your online account or the carrier’s…
The Drive 🤝 your inbox. Every weekday The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture. It’s rare for a car to become so controversial that an automaker gets engulfed in over-the-top drama, negative headlines, and endless online finger-pointing before it even reaches production. In fact, I can think of only two: the Ferrari Luce and this, the all-new Jaguar Type 01. You may recall the Jaguar Type 01 as the car that practically broke the internet when the concept that inspired it was revealed way back at the end…
