    Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming one of the automotive industry’s most important technologies, but its biggest impact may not look anything like the science-fiction scenarios people tend to imagine. Instead, AI is being woven into the less glamorous but critically important parts of the business, including quality control, factory logistics, robotics, software development, and increasingly the infotainment systems we use every time we get behind the wheel. General Motors, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other major automakers are already putting AI to work, and what stands out to us is that much of it is being used as another layer of intelligence around human workers rather than as a straightforward replacement for them.

    GM offers one of the better examples with its WeldBrAIn technology being piloted at Factory ZERO. Traditionally, weld quality inspections involved workers physically checking a limited number of components during a shift. GM says its AI-powered system can monitor every weld on every vehicle body in real time, giving employees information about potential defects that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to spot visually. That is the kind of AI implementation that makes immediate sense in automotive manufacturing. It does not need to be creative, emotional, or particularly conversational. It simply needs to identify patterns, notice something unusual, and give a trained person better information before a vehicle leaves the factory.

    Hyundai and BMW are pushing the concept considerably further by combining artificial intelligence with robotics. Hyundai Motor Group has outlined plans to deploy Boston Dynamics Atlas humanoid robots at its Georgia Metaplant beginning with parts-sequencing work in 2028, with more complicated assembly operations targeted for 2030. BMW, meanwhile, continues experimenting with humanoid robots at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, including the newer Figure 03 platform for logistics and sequencing applications. What is particularly interesting here is the idea of “physical AI,” where software intelligence gains the ability to interact with the real world. Repetitive lifting, hazardous jobs and monotonous material-handling tasks are obvious candidates, while employees increasingly become responsible for supervision, programming, maintenance and problem solving.

    The more visible AI revolution, however, is happening inside the car. GM announced this year that Google Gemini is coming to millions of 2022-model-year and newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Instead of barking rigid commands at a voice assistant and hoping it understands the exact phrase, drivers can have more natural conversations, ask follow-up questions, find places along a route, manage entertainment, summarize messages and eventually get answers about the vehicle itself. Mercedes-Benz has similarly been developing its MBUX Virtual Assistant with Google Cloud’s automotive AI technology, while BMW has been experimenting with smaller, vehicle-specific language models that may be better suited to running reliably in a car without depending entirely on a constant cloud connection. The goal is obvious. Automakers want the vehicle to understand what you mean, not merely what button you would have pressed.

    That could become one of the most useful developments in modern vehicle technology if automakers resist turning it into another gimmick. Imagine asking your car why a warning light appeared, how much range you need to reach your destination, whether a particular feature is activated, or what a setting buried three menus deep actually does. That is far more useful than giving us yet another oversized touchscreen filled with icons. There are still legitimate concerns surrounding privacy, data collection, inaccurate AI-generated answers, subscription fees and driver distraction. There is also the broader question of how much decision-making we really want to hand over to software. An AI system can analyze thousands of data points almost instantly, but that does not mean it understands the emotional reasons someone chooses a Mustang over an appliance-like crossover, or why a perfectly imperfect old sports car can create more joy than something objectively faster.

    From the Automotive Addicts perspective, AI probably belongs in the automotive world, provided it stays in its lane. We are all for technology that catches a bad weld, keeps an assembly line moving, takes a dangerous task away from a worker, helps diagnose a vehicle problem, or allows a driver to interact with the car without digging through endless touchscreen menus. Where things become less appealing is when artificial intelligence begins replacing the human judgment, personality and passion that make automobiles interesting in the first place. Cars are ultimately designed, engineered, driven, modified, raced, collected and loved by people. AI can become an incredibly powerful tool for the industry, but the best future for it is probably not one where machines replace the human automotive experience. It is one where they quietly make that experience safer, smarter and easier while we remain firmly in the driver’s seat.
