    • Firefly, Nio’s first right-hand drive model, was showcased at the ongoing Hong Kong Auto Show.
    • Nio is expected to adopt an asset-light distributor model to sell cars in the Hong Kong market.

The right-hand drive version of Firefly, the boutique compact car brand under Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), has made its debut at the 2026 Hong Kong Auto Show, preparing for its upcoming local launch.

The model is the first right-hand drive vehicle introduced by Nio Inc, and it became a focal point at the venue with its dynamic exterior design, cabin space, and active and passive safety features, Firefly said on Thursday.

The Auto Show is being held at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong and will run through June 22. Firefly’s booth is located at R14 in Hall 9.

Vehicles on Hong Kong roads are largely right-hand drive, unlike the left-hand drive layout in the Chinese mainland. This makes a right-hand drive version a prerequisite for entering the market.

Nio is rolling out an asset-light distributor partnership model in overseas markets. The Hong Kong market is expected to follow this approach, similar to the arrangement in Macau.

Last year, Nio launched a strategic partnership in Macau, authorizing Guangdong Hongyue Automobile Sales Group as the sole general distributor there.

The group is responsible for the market operations, user service, and brand ecosystem development of Nio’s three brands — Nio, Onvo, and Firefly — in Macau.

The Firefly EV is the lowest-priced model under Nio, with a starting price of 119,800 yuan ($17,730) in the Chinese mainland market.

Nio launched the right-hand drive version of the Firefly EV in Singapore in January this year, and brought the model to Thailand in March.

Firefly has now entered more than 10 overseas markets, and plans to gradually expand to nearly 40 countries and regions, including Europe, the US, and Southeast Asia.

That said, Nio has recently been slowing the pace of its overseas expansion. The company’s founder, chairman, and CEO William Li said in May that Nio would not exit overseas markets, but would more cautiously evaluate the return on investment.

Li reiterated that Nio will increasingly adopt a local partner model overseas in the future.

The Firefly brand delivered 5,663 vehicles in May, contributing 15.02% of Nio Inc’s deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

In the January-May period, the brand delivered 22,226 vehicles, contributing 14.77% of Nio Inc’s deliveries over the same period.
