The Denza Z, the first all-electric two-door sports car from BYD’s (HKEX: 1211) premium brand Denza, has appeared in the latest batch of new vehicle filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), meaning the model is one step closer to its official launch.
The Denza Z was filed in three variants — a hardtop version, a soft-top convertible version, and a performance version — all of which are battery electric sedans, according to a regulatory catalog published by the MIIT on Wednesday.
All three variants are powered by a tri-motor system consisting of one front motor and two rear motors, with peak outputs of 500 kW, 340 kW, and 340 kW, respectively, for a combined peak output of 1,180 kW (1,582 hp).
The hardtop and soft-top convertible versions have a top speed of 300 km/h, while the performance version can reach 300 km/h or 350 km/h, underscoring its track-oriented positioning.
The Denza Z measures 4,780 mm to 4,870 mm in length, depending on the variant and whether an optional rear wing is fitted. The model is 1,990 mm wide and 1,330 mm or 1,350 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,780 mm across all variants.
The three variants have curb weights of 2,220 kg, 2,240 kg, and 2,290 kg, respectively, and all seat four occupants.
The hardtop and performance versions come standard with a carbon fiber roof, with options including a rear wing, hood trim panels, brake calipers in different colors, and semi-hidden door handles.
The convertible version features a retractable soft top as standard, with options including soft tops in different colors and hidden door handles.
The Denza Z is equipped with BYD’s Blade Battery, which is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
Denza unveiled the Denza Z concept car at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show on April 23, 2025. The model adopts a design philosophy called Pure Emotion and is positioned as a sports car built for performance and the track.
Denza previously said the model would feature the DiSus-M body control system, the industry’s first designed exclusively for new energy vehicles (NEVs). The system is based on magnetorheological technology and can build damping force in less than 10 milliseconds, offering fast response and a wide adjustment range.
The Denza Z concept also uses BYD’s in-house developed steer-by-wire technology, which eliminates the mechanical connection in the steering system, and features a foldable steering wheel.
The model is the first sports car equipped with BYD’s e3 technology, which enables independent drive from three motors and independent steering of the two rear wheels.
The Denza Z is a key step in the Denza brand’s expansion into the high-performance sports car market.
With the model now in the regulatory catalog, its official launch is expected to be near, when it will compete with models including the Porsche 911 and the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in China’s high-performance car market.
