Ukraine has officially approved a new electric motorcycle for use by its armed forces, highlighting the growing role that battery-powered two-wheelers are playing in modern military operations.

According to local media, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense recently announced that the domestically produced Wolfstorm electric motorcycle has been codified and approved for military service. The bike is designed as a lightweight, two-person transport platform capable of carrying soldiers and equipment across difficult terrain.

According to the ministry, motorcycles have become some of the most valuable vehicles on the front lines, second only to pickup trucks. Their ability to quickly move personnel and supplies through areas with damaged infrastructure or limited road access has made them increasingly important for reconnaissance, logistics, and rapid-response missions.

The Wolfstorm weighs 105 kg (231 lb) and is powered by an 8 kW mid-drive electric motor mounted in the center of the frame for improved balance and off-road capability. The bike can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) and offers a range of around 100 km (62 miles) on a charge.

One particularly useful feature for military operations is the motorcycle’s modular battery system, which allows packs to be swapped quickly in the field. A full recharge takes around four hours, and the bike also includes reverse gear to improve maneuverability in tight spaces.

The electric motorcycle can carry up to 200 kg (440 lb), enough for two service members and additional equipment. Ukraine says the Wolfstorm can be used for reconnaissance, transporting explosive ordnance disposal teams, moving drone operators, logistical missions, evacuations, and security patrols.

The military also highlighted several advantages unique to electric propulsion, including near-silent operation, the absence of a significant thermal signature, lower operating costs, and reduced maintenance requirements.

    Electrek’s Take

We’ve seen electric motorcycles increasingly find niches where their unique advantages outweigh their limitations, and military applications may be one of the most compelling examples.

The quiet operation of an electric drivetrain can be a significant tactical advantage, especially for reconnaissance and small-unit mobility. Combine that with instant torque, fewer mechanical components, and the ability to swap batteries, and it’s easy to see why electric motorcycles are attracting military interest.

As electric vehicle technology continues to mature, don’t be surprised if we see more armed forces around the world adding battery-powered two-wheelers to their fleets.

And just as a reminder, Ukraine isn’t the only one expanding the use of electric two-wheelers. Russia has also made attempts, but those have often floundered against the Ukrainians.
