Motorcycles have gotten quite expensive, and not everyone can spend $20k on a vehicle that’s more of a toy and less of a necessity. In such a case, you want a motorcycle that delivers big performance with a smaller price tag. That’s exactly where the bike in question comes in. This Kawasaki naked bike offers the best balance of performance and practicality at a price tag that’s almost too good to be true. For under $10k, you get over 120 horsepower and quality underpinnings, a combination that not many of its rivals can match, even with a bigger price tag.

New Kawasaki Bikes Have Made Horsepower More Accessible

Back in 1984, Kawasaki launched the Ninja GPz900R, the first production motorcycle to breach the 150 miles per hour barrier. Despite being the fastest motorcycle back then, the bike only managed around 115 horsepower. That kind of performance was groundbreaking for the time, but compare that to modern superbikes, and it pales in comparison. Today, it’s normal for liter-class sports bikes to breach the 200-horsepower barrier to be even considered a serious contender in the segment. That’s how far motorcycles have come today.

    Kawasaki

In that way, performance has skyrocketed today. Modern motorcycles are more powerful than ever, but there’s another side to the performance coin. Performance has also gotten very accessible today. Take the Ninja 500, for example, which gets you 51 ponies for under $5,500. Likewise, you no longer have to spend big money to unlock over a hundred ponies. Today, a sub-$10k motorcycle produces more power than the legendary GPz900R, and there’s no better example of this than Kawasaki’s very own near-liter-class middleweight naked motorcycle. Starting at a buck under $10,000, this Kawasaki naked bike produces 123 horsepower, complemented with sharp Sugomi styling, agile handling, and a suite of electronics.

When you want a naked motorcycle with a lot of horsepower, there’s no shortage of options. At the top of the segment, you have nakeds like the Ducati Streetfighter V4 that produces 205 horsepower. But that’s an expensive piece of machinery, starting at over $30k. You still don’t have to spend that kind of money to unlock serious performance, though. But if your budget is only $10,000, and you want the best bang for your buck, there’s hardly anything better than the Kawasaki Z900.

This Kawasaki naked motorcycle sits at the higher end of the middleweight naked motorcycle segment, pumping out 123 horsepower at 9,500 RPM. And it offers this level of performance without the premium price tag you’d expect with it. It does that while also offering a sharp Sugomi design, everyday ergonomics, agile chassis, and a suite of rider aids. Put simply, the Z900 is hard to beat for the price at which it offers that kind of performance.

It’s easy to see why, especially when you consider its pricier rivals that barely struggle to breach the 120 horsepower mark. For instance, its primary rival, the Yamaha MT-09 SP, only manages 117 horsepower. On the other hand, the Triumph Street Triple 765 R only makes 118.4 horsepower. Meanwhile, no other naked bike around the $10k mark even comes close. The BMW F 900 R tops out at 105 horsepower, and even the four-banger Suzuki GSX-750 manages only 114 horsepower. It’s this reason why the Z900 sticks out: it offers the most performance for the least amount of price.

Punchy Inline-Four Performance With A Dash Of Urban Civility

The Kawasaki Z900 features an updated inline-four engine that’s tuned for smooth and linear performance, which is praised for its crisp throttle response and a searing top end. Kawasaki says this engine offers plenty of low- to mid-range torque that’s ideal for city riding and highway cruising, but cross the 6,000 RPM mark and civility goes out of the window. Thanks to this quality, it’s easy to see why the Z900 leans more toward track-ready performance while still maintaining some urban civility you’d expect from a middleweight naked motorcycle.

What adds to the Z900’s comfortable yet sporty character is a slip-and-assist clutch that keeps the rear end in line under aggressive downshifts. Kawasaki says this clutch also keeps the lever pull light for city riding. The bike also comes standard with the Kawasaki Quick Shift (KQS), which works from as low as 1,500 RPM. All this while, the intake has been designed with acoustic testing, giving the bike a throaty intake howl that should only add to the drama when you’re giving it all the beans on a racetrack.

The Same Personality Extends To Its Chassis And Underpinnings

The same comfortable yet track-ready personality extends to the bike’s chassis and underpinnings. The bike uses a high-tensile trellis frame and lightweight aluminum swingarm for sharp yet predictable handling. Meanwhile, the suspension has adjustability to let you fine-tune the settings. Combined, the frame and suspension are said to give the bike precise and responsive handling that should feel reassuring but not twitchy during relaxed rides.

    Kawasaki

For the current generation, Kawasaki has also updated the braking system with radial-mounted four-piston calipers. The manufacturer says this new braking system offers better feedback and a lighter lever pull than the one on the earlier Z900. That’s paired with sticky Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires. Finally, there’s also an SE version with Ohlins suspension from the factory (shown above).

Sharp Sugomi Styling With Ergonomics That Put You In Control

We wouldn’t talk about the Z900 without mentioning its drop-dead sharp Sugomi sterling. Kawasaki describes it as the intense aura given off by a powerful object, and we can’t disagree. The Z900’s design philosophy is unique in a way few bikes can be at this price point. And this philosophy can be seen throughout the bike. The low-slung headlight cowl, muscular tank, and upswept tail all come together to give the bike a look of a crouching predator that’s about to strike. In short, the Z900 looks aggressive and purposeful.

The design also enables the sweet spot of ergonomics for most riders, offering you both comfort and control. The updated riding triangle is said to improve communication between the rider and the motorcycle, thanks to the flat-type aluminum handlebar with wide grips and slightly rear-set pegs. Kawasaki also offers Ergo-Fit seats to further improve that comfort.

Packed With Refreshed Rider Aids, Too

    Kawasaki

Like all else, the Z900 also offers more electronic aids than you’d expect at this price point. It features a six-axis Bosch IMU, which enables lean-sensitive traction control, ABS, and braking management. This should help improve confidence when pushing the bike hard in corners. A 5-inch TFT display with Rideology The App connectivity, two power modes, cruise control, and LED lights are standard, too.

An SE Variant Sweetens The Pot

If you like the Z900 but want a little more kick, the more serious Z900 SE ABS is what you should eye. It brings Ohlins S46 rear shock and Brembo M4.32 calipers, alongside a special colorway with more green. But for most riders, the standard Z900 is more than enough, especially at the price it comes in at. With its performance and a touch of everyday sensibilities, the Z900 is a complete package for those looking for a powerful naked motorcycle. Sure, other nakeds can offer the same balance, but none come for the same price as the Z900, making it the most bang for the buck naked bike under $10k.
