Subaru has issued a recall affecting nearly 70,000 examples of its popular Forester and Forester Hybrid after discovering a potential issue that could cause the sunroof glass to detach while driving. The recall covers certain 2026 model-year vehicles and stems from a manufacturing concern involving the sunroof assembly process. While no injuries or crashes have been linked to the defect, Subaru is taking proactive steps to address the issue before it becomes a larger safety concern.

According to information filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 69,663 vehicles are included in the recall campaign. The problem centers on the bonding process used to secure the sunroof glass to the sliding frame assembly. Investigators determined that the issue is not related to the adhesive materials themselves but rather how those materials were applied during production. Over time, insufficient bonding could weaken, potentially allowing the glass panel to separate from the vehicle.

Subaru estimates that approximately 2.9 percent of the recalled vehicles may actually have the defect. The automaker has received three technical reports in the United States related to the issue, though fortunately none have resulted in accidents, injuries, or property damage. Even so, the possibility of a glass panel detaching at highway speeds presents an obvious safety risk for both occupants and other motorists sharing the road.

To remedy the situation, Subaru dealers will inspect the sunroof assembly on affected Foresters and Forester Hybrids. If improper adhesion is detected, technicians will replace the glass panel with a properly assembled unit at no cost to owners. Subaru began notifying dealerships about the recall in late May and plans to begin contacting affected owners on July 24. Owners who believe their vehicle may be included are encouraged to check their VIN through the NHTSA recall database or contact their local Subaru dealership for additional information.
