After a brief hiatus, the Jeep Cherokee returns for the 2026 model year as a more practical and efficient choice within Jeep’s growing lineup. The “No Plug, All Adventure” ethos of the new Cherokee hints at Jeep’s new approach to a potential lineup of electrified vehicles with a different kind of philosophy.
Taking a more traditional hybrid approach than the well-received Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the Cherokee marks a significant shift in not only the electrified offerings from Jeep but the apparent market pivot from plug-in hybrids. How does this new Jeep hybrid fit into the seemingly evolving market of green vehicles and shifting consumer demands? Discover why the 2026 Jeep Cherokee appeals to drivers who want efficiency without the hassle of plugging in.
Pre-owned vehicle prices can vary greatly depending on age, mileage, trim level and location. When considering a pre-owned vehicle, it is advisable to have a thorough inspection performed by a trained technician.

The Jeep Cherokee has been a long-time member of the Jeep family, having originally been a two-door version of the larger Jeep Wagoneer in 1974. The second-generation Cherokee came along in 1983 as a unibody SUV. The mega popular Cherokee XJ lasted until 2001, when the Cherokee disappeared. Cloaked as the Jeep Liberty in the United States, but still marketed as the Cherokee overseas, the third and fourth generation Cherokee lasted until 2012. For the 2013 model year, the Jeep Cherokee nameplate came back Stateside. However, the Cherokee as we knew it lost its boxy-rugged appeal and gained some new curves. The fifth-generation Cherokee arguably resembles its big brother, the Grand Cherokee. After the 2023 model year, the Jeep Cherokee vanished from the lineup again, leaving a noticeable gap for fans who missed its practical size and versatility.

10 Biggest Differences Between The Old And New Jeep Cherokee
The all-new Jeep Cherokee is headed for the market. Here are the differences you should know between it and the outgoing model.
For 2026, the Jeep Cherokee makes a triumphant return, not only gaining size, but a new full hybrid drivetrain. The new 2026 Cherokee is the only Jeep hybrid model available at the moment, as the popular SUV manufacturer takes a new direction with its alternatively powered vehicles. The new Cherokee sits on Stellantis’ STLA platform. This larger platform also underpins the Jeep Wagoneer S EV, so it’s evident how the Cherokee gained its larger dimensions and interior space. The Cherokee is five inches longer, with a 6.4-inch longer wheelbase than the previous generation. The new Cherokee is also 1.3 inches taller and 1.5 inches wider than its predecessor, allowing for 34 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats, and a very useful 68 cubic feet with the second row folded down.

The Cherokee uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine in conjunction with a pair of electric motors. The 1.6-liter itself is rated at 177 horsepower and 221 pound feet of torque. Assembled in a Stellantis engine plant in Dundee, Michigan, this 1.6-liter engine is not new; it’s actually been in use abroad for over ten years. Together, the pair of electric motors and the gas-burning engine produce 210 horsepower and 230 pound feet of torque. As this new Cherokee is a full hybrid, it relies on its regenerative braking system to convert kinetic energy into electricity to help maintain the charge of the 1.03 kilowatt-hour battery. The Cherokee’s self-charging system enables drivers to enjoy hybrid efficiency without plugging in.

The Cherokee normally operates as a front-wheel-drive SUV, keeping the rear axle completely disconnected. When needed, fifty percent of the power output can be applied to the rear axle. Although it is a Jeep, locking axles are not an option at the moment – but the Cherokee does offer four driving modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud. These driving modes are tailored more to the regular user than locking axles would be. Perhaps locking axles will be available for the Trail Rated version that’s on the horizon.
Why Only One Hybrid Jeep?
The Jeep Hybrid Strategy
2024 – 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid JL (4th Gen) Facelift SUVJeep
In an effort to meet evolving customer needs and shifting demand, Stellantis completely discontinued the plug-in hybrid models by the end of the 2025 model year: the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. Although sales figures were strong through 2024, industry reports show a noticeable decline in Jeep 4xe volume as sales softened in 2025.
This can be attributed to reduced federal tax incentives, added complexity, higher costs, and the reality that many owners were inconsistently charging their vehicles. Paired with growing range anxiety and lower-than-expected efficiency of PHEVs, Jeep phased out the 4xe line and introduced the new Cherokee as a traditional self-charging hybrid (HEV). According to one Stellantis spokesperson, “This approach reinforces the company’s commitment to offering advanced propulsion systems that maximize efficiency and provide options from internal combustion to hybrid range-extended and fully electric solutions.”
Not Just A Jeep Thing
2023 Ford Escape PHEVFord
The battery electric vehicle (BEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), for many, are the hopeful future of transportation. Even with considerable investments by the auto industry in PHEV technology, the truth is in the numbers. Conversely, the hybrid has seen historically high sales volume. Second quarter sales of hybrid models for 2025 saw a drastic uptick of around 36% from the previous year. The popularity of models like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid have also really helped bolster the sales of hybrids over PHEVs.
Delivering anywhere from 30–50% better fuel economy than an internal combustion engine, and costing anywhere from $5,000 to $12,000 less than a PHEV, the hybrid offers a great balance of practicality and affordability.
Early EV/PHEV adopters did encounter some challenges from which to learn from. Inconsistent public charging stations and reduced battery efficiency and range in cold weather are two main concerns. Although battery technology has improved, it’s hard to deny the practical middle ground of a traditional hybrid model.
Jeep Hybrids That Are Gone But Not Forgotten
Jeep Wrangler 4xe
2024 – 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid JL (4th Gen) Facelift SUV – front 3/4 angle in gray while chargingJeep
It’s important to note, that the regular gas-burning versions of our favorite Jeep icons are not going away – only the 4xe versions. The Wrangler 4xe was Jeep’s flagship plug-in hybrid model, and by far Jeep’s most popular PHEV. Combining Jeep’s legendary off-roader with electrification made the Wrangler 4xe a truly unique offering in the hybrid class. It uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with two electric motors and a 17.3-kWh battery.
The Wrangler 4xe has a total output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque. However, running on electricity only, it had a range of 20–25 miles. A 2024–2025 Wrangler 4xe in good condition will run between $28,000 and $42,000 depending on mileage and trim level. According to Kelley Blue Book, the Wrangler 4xe holds its value reasonably well for a PHEV, but it does depreciate faster than the gas-burning variant due to battery life and technology concerns.
Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe front 3/4Stellantis North America
Like the Wrangler 4xe, the Grand Cherokee is the more refined off-roader, and it came in four trims. Limited 4xe, Trailhawk 4xe, Overland 4xe, and Summit/Summit Reserve. The Grand Cherokee still uses the powerful combination of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the twin electric motors, which together provide excellent low-end torque, which comes in handy when lightly off-roading, or simply merging. As this is a Grand Cherokee, it comes with all the luxurious appointments you would expect from Jeep’s midsize luxury SUV. Looking at the Kelley Blue Book website, prices can range anywhere from $38,500 up to $48,000, again completely dependent on miles and trim level.
The Chrysler Pacifica PHEV
Frank B. Rhodes Jr, great-grandson of Chrysler founder Walter P. Chrysler, wants to rescue Chrysler and Dodge from Stellantis.Chrysler
Currently, the only plug-in hybrid minivan available in the United States, the Pacifica PHEV combines its 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with two electric motors for a combined output of 287 horsepower. The hybrid system relies on a 16-kWh battery pack that can deliver approximately 32 miles of electrically powered range; the total driving range is around 520 miles. The Pacifica came in three available trims; Touring L, Limited and the top tier Pinnacle trim. This is an excellent choice for families and will handle quick errands around town on its battery power while leaving the road trips for the combination of battery and internal combustion propulsion. When regularly plugged in, the Pacifica offers real world EV efficiency. However, it was significantly more expensive than the gas version when brand new. The Pacifica holds value reasonably well with used prices averaging from $29,600 to $42,000, depending on trim level and mileage.
