More Color, More Alpina, Same Weird Face

The next-generation BMW X7 is far along in development, based on what we’ve seen in spy photos, but many details about it are still a mystery. However, we’re getting a peek at what may be coming thanks to a reliable source on BMW forum Bimmerpost. The poster has recently updated the running list of details on upcoming models, and it includes information about model options, Alpina features, and how long this new SUV will stick around.

    It’s Becoming More Luxurious

The X7, and especially the Alpina XB7 version, have been the de facto luxury SUV flagships for BMW (with the XM focusing on performance). It seems that BMW feels it could do more to bring it into parity with the even more plush 7 Series, though. To do that, it’s going to add some additional features, including two-tone paint, powered doors, and rear seats with ventilation and massage. Naturally, these will all be optional features, but they all mean that you won’t miss out on some of the more premium features offered on the 7 and i7 just because you want an SUV.

BMW may be aiming to make its Alpina line, and by extension, the Alpina X7, even more luxurious. The forum post indicates that the Alpina models will only be available in a two-row configuration, with a maximum of five occupants. Not having a third row could open up space for fancier rear seat options, possibly with impressive amounts of recline, like those available in high-end Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class SUVs.

Additionally, the list of expected trim levels for the Alpina lists something we haven’t seen before: xDrive100. We haven’t seen a trim level with “100” in the name yet, which would put it higher than any other BMW trim. It suggests something seriously special, and probably powerful. Of course, trim levels for the Alpina model is something new altogether, since the XB7 currently only comes in a single model. The post shows lower xDrive40 and xDrive60 trims, too. So, maybe it will be possible to get Alpina looks and luxury without having to have the hottest engine.

It Could Be Around For A Long Time

One of the other unusual tidbits in the recent leaks is a possible lifetime for the new X7 line. It will supposedly enter production in September 2027, and may continue until July 2036. Nearly a whole decade seems like an enormous amount of time, but it’s roughly equivalent to the current X7. The SUV we know today was introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model year. So, if it wraps up next year with a 2028 model year, it will have been on sale for basically the same amount of time.

What Else We Know About The X7

Spy photos that we’ve seen of the X7 show that the SUV is growing a fair bit, which will be great both for passenger space with three rows, and room for luxurious seats in high trims. The styling seems to be inspired by the 7 Series with a couple of enormous vertical kidney grilles and slender running lights with separate, lower main headlights. It also, somewhat surprisingly, features electronic tabs for exterior door handles similar to those on the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volvo EX60.

We haven’t had a clear look at the interior, but we have been able to spot what seems to be BMW’s new full-width head-up display system. It should be accompanied by BMW’s latest infotainment system that’s making its debut in the iX3.

BMW’s new interior interface is made up of four parts, each designed to minimize distraction as much as possible.

Finally, BMW will be offering a wide array of powertrains in the new X7, including an electric iX7. We believe we’ve seen some kind of sporty M variant of X7 (possibly just an M60-style model), and we know Alpina versions are coming. The Bimmerpost thread also suggests diesels may still appear, but likely not in the U.S.
