Tesla has once again put its long-awaited second-generation Roadster in the spotlight, but there’s a rather important detail that prospective buyers might want to consider before putting down a substantial reservation payment. Nearly a decade after first teasing the electric supercar, Tesla recently unveiled the Roadster again with even more outrageous performance promises, including a claimed 0-60 mph time of just 0.81 seconds and rocket-inspired thruster technology. However, according to a report from The Drive, which highlights findings originally uncovered by InsideEVs, Tesla’s latest reservation agreement makes it clear that customers aren’t necessarily guaranteed to receive a vehicle at all. That’s a concerning disclosure considering the company’s lengthy history of delays surrounding a car that was originally expected to arrive years ago.

The language in Tesla’s reservation agreement is particularly revealing, stating that the Roadster remains under development and that the automaker cannot guarantee when a vehicle will be delivered or whether delivery will happen. Customers willing to commit as much as $250,000 are essentially securing an approximate position in line rather than an actual production slot. Tesla also makes it clear that the reservation doesn’t constitute a formal vehicle purchase, while final pricing, equipment, and technical specifications remain subject to change. For a vehicle generating this much excitement and commanding such significant financial commitments, those are some fairly substantial uncertainties. It’s one thing to put down a deposit on an upcoming vehicle with an established production schedule, but quite another to commit serious money to something that still has no firm delivery commitment.

Tesla currently estimates that Roadster production will begin in 2028, although the company’s previous track record makes that timeline difficult to accept without some skepticism. The second-generation Roadster was originally introduced in 2017, when Tesla promised blistering acceleration and performance figures that seemed almost unbelievable at the time. Fast-forward to 2026, and CEO Elon Musk has raised expectations even further with claims of acceleration approaching the limits of what seems physically possible for a road-going vehicle. While Tesla has demonstrated some impressive electric vehicle engineering over the years, the Roadster remains a perfect example of how ambitious announcements don’t always translate into timely production vehicles. Until actual customer cars start rolling off an assembly line, those remarkable performance claims remain promises rather than independently verified production-car capabilities.

There is at least some reassurance for prospective buyers, as Tesla’s reservation agreement allows customers to cancel and receive a full refund before entering into a final vehicle purchase agreement. Reservations cannot be transferred, but the agreement reportedly doesn’t include the resale restrictions that Tesla has previously imposed on certain special-edition vehicles. Still, the bigger issue is whether customers should be expected to commit such large sums without a guaranteed delivery date, confirmed specifications, or even a definitive purchase price. The upcoming Tesla Roadster could eventually become one of the most extraordinary electric performance cars ever produced, and we’d certainly welcome the opportunity to see whether its incredible claims hold up in the real world. For now, though, nearly 10 years after the original announcement, enthusiasts have another spectacular Tesla Roadster reveal to talk about, but still no production car they can actually drive home.
