Porsche Might Have Hidden Mission S Supercar’s Genius Manual Gearbox In Plain Sight

Porsche’s new era was officially unveiled last week in the form of the Mission S concept, a functional concept previewing what will be a series-production addition to the Porsche lineup as a supercar above the 911. That still leaves room for a 918 Spyder successor in a hypercar role above that, mind you. Much of the Mission S’s magic was lost beneath the chaos that ensued the same day when Tesla launched the new Roadster, but one of the more compelling stories to emerge was that the Mission S platform is capable of accommodating a manual gearbox.

But after studying the concept all weekend long, we might have uncovered some simple brilliance that suggests the manual is already there…

Hiding In Plain Sight, But Maybe Not The Manual You Wanted

Porsche has not been shy about publishing dozens of images and videos from the Mission S’s debut in New York City, including a small gallery of design sketches. While many of them are standard conceptual sketches, not accurately representative of scale and proportion, one image stuck out — designs for the shift lever.

One of the diagrams in this image shows the top portion of the shift lever — which is made of dark wood on the finished concept — with an H-pattern on it. This only shows six gates, not a seventh as you might expect from a modern manual with six forward gears and one reverse. That’s the first interesting clue. But the second detail we noticed was multiple sketches indicating height adjustment, specifically “2 adjust[able] heights.” This shift lever is also indicated as linked to an electronic controller below.

So what does it all mean?We think — consider this informed speculation — that the Mission S might be the first combustion-powered Porsche to employ asimulated manual transmission like Ferrari’s 12Cilindri Manuale. The shift lever will remain in its lower position when in automatic mode, and by pulling it up you’d engage manual mode. The increase in height would increase the distance of the lever action, plus bring the shift lever closer to the steering wheel, which is much better for manual shifting.

The steering wheel has a big red button labeled “on your own” which we know disables all the electronic nannies, but maybe this could also engage manual mode, making sure you really are in control.

Why Would Porsche Do This? Hasn’t It Seen The Backlash Ferrari Caught?

Porsche has been actively developing a simulated manual transmission that works with automatic or PDK hardware for some time now, long before Ferrari’s tech emerged. CarBuzz first uncovered a patent for this tech from the company back in March 2026, with the patent filing dating back to 2024. But a second filing in September made this all the more real, as it detailed the simulated clutch pedal and how the entire ecosystem would interact with the vehicle. Companies don’t file multiple evolving patents just for fun without some intention of using the technology, or protecting it from use. But hasn’t Porsche learned from Ferrari’s missteps?

It may be rude to call Ferrari’s ‘Manuale-by-wire’ technology a misstep, but it truly arrived at the wrong time. Launching just before this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, it drew plenty of attention, with many hailing it as a way for automakers to keep manual interaction alive. That praise was short-lived, as just a month later, during Monterey Car Week, McLaren announced the McL 6GT with an authentic manual transmission, Hennessey’s new Blackbird was launched with a mechanical manual, and Gordon Murray launched the S1 with, you guessed it, a real manual.

Suddenly, the praise for Ferrari’s innovation turned to mockery, with enthusiasts citing McLaren, GMSV, and Hennessey as examples of why Ferrari’s ‘fake’ manual was a cop-out. So would Porsche really push through with this given that reaction? We think so.

CarBuzz Insight — Why This Matters

Don’t forget, the Mission S concept only previews a production car, one which may still be a few years out. It will also possibly employ a hybrid power plant, and hybrids do not tend to pair well with manual transmissions. Porsche also has a tendency to take technology and improve upon it, so if there is ever going to be a close-to-perfect version of this technology, Porsche has as good a chance as anyone of achieving that.

Porsche needs the production supercar based on the Mission S to be a success if it is going to compete effectively in McLaren and Ferrari territory, so why not go all-in on new technology and make a statement of intent?
