Ferrari unleashed the F80 hybrid hypercar at the tail end of 2024 as the latest entry in its Special Series, that collection of flagship models that includes cars like the LaFerrari and Enzo before it. And just like those previous entries, the F80 will spawn additional variants.
One we know is coming is an open-top version. Another is likely to be a hardcore version designed strictly for track use, and we might already know its name.
F80 Could Be Newest Member Of Ultra-Exclusive XX Program
CarBuzz researchers have uncovered a fresh Ferrari trademark filing in Argentina for the name FXX80, potentially revealing the identity of a hardcore F80. The XX designation points to Ferrari’s exclusive XX program, a rolling laboratory where the brand’s most loyal customers put future technologies to the test on the racetrack.
It’s not the first time the name has surfaced. In May, our researchers uncovered Italian trademark applications for both FXX80 and F80XX, and a swag of additional names. Ferrari’s latest move in Argentina suggests FXX80 could be the name it ultimately chooses for its hardcore F80.
Camouflaged prototypes of a hardcore F80 have been spotted, sporting a massive rear wing that would make even a full-blown race car jealous. The new brute could become Ferrari’s fastest model not based on a race car, a title currently held by the LaFerrari-based FXX-K. That previous XX model can lap Ferrari’s famous Fiorano test track in just 1:14.00, and any new addition to the program could be even quicker.
What Exactly Is The XX Program?

Ferrari designed its XX program to enable customers to help develop technologies through organized driving sessions at leading racetracks. The program launched in the mid-2000s with the Enzo-based FXX, and forms part of the wider Corse Clienti driving program that lets owners take classic Ferrari race cars onto the track. Ferrari typically offers around 30 XX cars at a time and keeps them during the development phase, although owners can eventually take their cars home.
While XX models are usually track-only machines, Ferrari has also introduced the XX Stradale (Italian for “street”) classification recently. The SF90 XX Stradale was the first to bring that formula to the road.
Ferrari’s XX cars typically feature upgrades across all aspects of performance, from aerodynamics and handling to powertrain tweaks that can deliver extra horsepower. Right now the F80 is powered by a hybrid powertrain combining a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with a trio of electric motors, two of which drive the front wheels. The total system output is 1,184 hp. The powertrain also features electric-aided turbochargers for sharper response and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

With just 799 examples of the F80 set for production, the XX program could offer another route to owning Ferrari’s current flagship. The FXX80 will undoubtedly be extremely limited, but buyers could also have a better shot at getting behind the wheel of the open-top version, prototypes of which have also been spotted.
For the mega rich, the real dilemma is whether to blow the budget on one F80 or make room in the garage for all three.
