Geely confirms Canada entry with first cars in 2027, but no models yet

Geely is coming to Canada. The Chinese automaker’s mainstream brand announced today that it has started setting up Canadian operations and recruiting a dealer network, with its first vehicles going on sale in 2027.

What Geely isn’t saying is which vehicles. There are no models, no prices and no dealer locations, just a new website at geely.ca and a promise of more details closer to launch.

A 3-million-car automaker most Canadians have never driven

Geely Auto Group sold more than 3.02 million vehicles in 2025, including nearly 1.69 million electrified vehicles (BEVs and plug-in hybrids), according to the company. It has sold over 2.23 million so far in 2026, through September.

The group sells cars under three brands: Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co. Its parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding, also owns Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus, so Geely cars have been on Canadian roads for years. Just under Swedish and British badges.

This time it’s the Geely name itself.

Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada, said the brand is entering with “a long-term commitment” and added that “trust is earned over time, and we are committed to earning it here.”

The company says it’s building its retail and service network with “highly trusted and experienced partners who understand their local communities.” That reads like a traditional franchised dealer model, not Tesla-style direct sales.

As for product, Geely leads with the EX5 electric SUV (the Galaxy E5 in China) and the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid in export markets like Australia and the UK. Those are the obvious candidates, but Geely Auto Canada won’t confirm anything yet.

Ottawa’s 6.1% quota opened the door

The timing is no coincidence. In January, Canada broke with the US and slashed its 100% tariff on Chinese EVs as part of a deal with Beijing that also lowered Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola.

The arrangement created a quota of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs per year at the 6.1% most-favoured-nation rate, effective March 1. Anything beyond that still gets hit with the 100% surtax.

And the quota isn’t even full. Global Affairs Canada hands out permits in two six-month periods, first-come, first-served, and only to EV makers or their Canadian agents. Demand fell short in the first period, so 8,897 unused vehicles rolled over, bringing the current period, which runs to February 28, 2027, to 33,397 vehicles.

Geely’s 2027 timeline means its first cars will most likely come in under the second quota year.

It won’t be alone. BYD is planning 20 Canadian dealerships, starting in Toronto. And in June, China’s ambassador to Canada said the first Lotus EVs built in China by Geely Holding would arrive under the deal in July.

Canada is Geely’s only door into North America

For US readers, this is as close as Geely’s own brand is going to get. Washington’s rule on Chinese connected-vehicle technology has already shut Geely-owned Polestar out of the US market, and a Chinese brand selling Chinese-built cars has no path there.

So Canada becomes the test case for how Chinese automakers do in a North American market with real dealers, real winters and real competition from GM, Ford, Toyota and Tesla.

    Electrek’s Take

Announcing a market entry a year or more out with no product attached is a bit odd. But I get it. Geely needs dealers before it needs cars, and the best dealer groups in Canada are being courted by Chinese automakers right now. Getting the flag planted early matters.

I’m really curious to know which vehicles the brand will bring to Canada.

I’m heading to the Paris Motor Show with Geely next week, and you can be sure I’ll be asking everyone I meet which models are coming to Canada. I’ll report back with whatever I can get.

If you’re thinking about an EV, powering it with home solar can cut your fuel costs to nearly zero. With electricity rates up almost 10% last year and expected to keep climbing, going solar is one of the best ways to protect yourself against rising costs. And with lease and PPA options, you can do it with zero upfront cost and start saving immediately. If you want to find the best deal, check out EnergySage. It’s a free service with hundreds of pre-vetted installers competing for your business, so you save 20 to 30% compared to going it alone. No sales calls until you pick an installer.
