If you like finding your car exactly where you parked it, we’ve got some good news. Auto theft in America is down in the first half of 2026, and that applies to almost everywhere across the US. Almost everywhere.

There is one city that, sadly, is bucking the trend. But still, it could be worse.

The number of reported vehicle thefts in the US is dropping, and it’s not by a fraction of a number. In the first half of 2026, 268,415 thefts were reported to police. That amounts to a 21% drop, a properly huge decline over last year’s stolen car numbers.

This wasn’t just an improvement in a few locations, either. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a nonprofit focused on fighting insurance fraud and crime, reported that vehicle theft was down in all 50 states. Auto theft has been falling for years, and was down 22.8% last year as well.

According to NICB data, Washington, D.C., had the biggest percentage change in vehicle theft. The number of stolen cars there was cut in half, down to just 1,262 in the first half of the year. However, D.C. still has the highest vehicle theft rate compared to all US states at 181.94 thefts per 100,000 people. That’s more than double the national average of 77.81.

Other states saw big drops as well. Vehicle theft in Tennessee fell 42%. In Vermont, New Hampshire, and Colorado, thefts were all down by just over 33%.

California had the most vehicle thefts by state with 57,821 stolen cars and trucks in the first half of 2026. Since it has the most people at around 7 million, that makes sense. But among all the good news, there is a little bit of bad.

Which Major City Saw Theft Rates Go Up?

With California on top by state, it follows that Los Angeles is highest by metro area. The LA-Long Beach-Anaheim area saw 21,540 cars reported stolen in the first half of the year, but that’s still down 23%. California had two metro areas on the list, with the Bay Area at number five and Riverside in ninth. Similarly, New York-Newark, traditionally a theft hotspot, saw theft drop 16%. Houston dropped 18%, and Dallas was down 30%.

At the end of the day, only one metro area in the top 10 saw vehicle theft rise. Sorry, Chicago – the Chicagoland region saw theft rise by 2%. It’s not a major jump, but amid double-digit declines around the country, the Windy City is certainly bucking the trend.

All this said, vehicle theft has been on the decline for decades. It peaked in 1991 when rates hit 12 thefts per 1,000 vehicles on the road and has since fallen to fewer than two, though there was a slight bump related to the so-called Kia Boys trend and a vulnerability in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

The NICB says that even organized crime groups are moving away from what it calls “traditional vehicle theft.” The NICB doesn’t have a single reason for the decline, but instead gives credit to collaboration between law enforcement, insurers, and authorities.

A quarter-million stolen cars and trucks isn’t nothing, but it is still a big improvement. The substantial drop over decades shows that immobilizers and other modern techniques deter thieves. And your car is now more likely to be there when you come back in the morning than it has been in at least 60 years.

Modern car theft has moved beyond the need for an original key, with high-tech tools letting crooks capture the signal from a key inside your home or plugging directly into a car’s electrical system to program their own. But the basic theft-prevention tips remain the same. The NICB suggests you park in a well-lit area, lock your doors, and don’t leave your car running.
