You know a car is going to be fire when even the completely camouflaged prototype would turn heads at any car meet in the world. The CarBuzz spies have just captured the latest monster machine from the AMG devils at Mercedes-Benz, and it meets that description perfectly.
But is this the new AMG Black Series, or will it be something even better?

When it comes to its two-door performance coupe, Mercedes-AMG isn’t just pulling out all the stops — it is pulling out all the stops on every organ it can find. Now it is back at the Nürburgring in Germany, where every great European performance car is honed on the most punishing public road in the world.
Mercedes-AMG has shown versions of this car before, along with teasing the new AMG GT race car. But these latest images show a car that is even more aggressive than the one AMG had on display, with aerodynamic features that we haven’t seen on the car before either.

The most obvious of the changes are the new aero flaps on the front fenders. Neither the road nor race car shown before has had those flaps, which let high-pressure air out of the wheel arches.

On this car, they do more than just vent, though. You can see that the inside flaps are open more than the flaps on the outside of the curve, which hints at real-time adjustments to downforce for cornering.

There are more changes up front, and Mercedes-AMG has removed some of the flics on the front bumper of the earlier car. Either AMG has replaced their function with the fender slats or they’re being kept for an even more special model than the Black Series car.

This prototype still has side exits like the old one, popping out from under the doors. But they’re different, with the new design likely making some sort of performance improvement. The earlier car also had exterior hood latches, which appear to have been removed from this version.

Keep moving around the back of the car, and you’ll find a new wing. The gooseneck supports no longer extend above the top of the wing, and the wing itself is much larger than before. It has an entire extra element, which should add even more downforce to the car.

At the very back, there is an incredibly aggressive but also very spartan diffuser. This part looks like it was taken straight from a race car, and it’s not the massaged and fancy-finish look you would expect.

You can’t see it, but this car will almost definitely have a version of the latest Benz V8. The new flat-plane crank engine launched in the S-Class, but it will be modified for AMG use as well. The last Black Series GT made 720 horsepower; this car will almost certainly make even more.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

AMG is going big, planning new Mythos models and the just-revealed CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. Now this GT, which we thought was a Black Series, is looking even more extreme than the last time we saw it. Could this be a new Mythos? It’s too early for us to guess, but we’d bet that there will at least be an AMG GT Black Series and then a car just slightly above it. With the name to be revealed.
We hope to learn more about this 911 GT3 RS-hunter soon, but it likely won’t be until early next year.
