Toyota led US new EV sales growth last month with a refreshed lineup of electric SUVs.
The Toyota bZ remains a top-selling EV in August
Lower-priced models helped push new electric vehicle sales up 2.5% in August from the month prior, with around 78,895 units sold.
That’s still down 46.9% from last August, when buyers were still rushing to claim the federal $7,500 EV tax credit, but there’s some good news.
According to Cox Automotive’s August EV Market Monitor, new lower-priced electric models helped drive growth last month while narrowing the price gap with gas-powered vehicles even further.
The average transaction price (ATP) for a new EV fell to $54,754 in August, down 1.3% from July and 2.8% from the year prior.
The price gap between EVs and gas cars narrowed to $4,847, or 9.7%. Cox Automotive said the lower ATP was mainly due to higher sales of lower-priced EVs such as the Toyota bZ, Chevrolet Bolt, and Toyota C-HR, as well as the Tesla Model 3, whose ATP dropped 1.9% from July.

Tesla remained the leader by a wide margin with 40,816 electric vehicles sold, followed by Toyota, Rivian, Hyundai, and Cadillac.
After sales slipped 3.8% from July, Tesla’s market share fell to 51.7%. Toyota led EV sales growth last month in the US with 4,964 units sold, up 35% from July. Chevrolet (+30%), Cadillac (+13%), and Kia (+12%) also posted growth in August.
Although it’s still not a huge number, keep in mind that Toyota sold just over 1,000 bZ4X electric SUVs in August 2025.

After Toyota launched the updated model last October, the bZ, as it’s now called, has remained among America’s top-selling EVs. In the first half of 2026, it was the fourth best-selling EV, behind the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Tesla Model 3, and Tesla Model Y.
Through the first eight months of 2026, Toyota has sold over 22,500 bZs. Last year, Toyota sold 15,609 bZ4Xs in total, including the bZ in the final months.

To put it in perspective, Ford moved just 15,484 Mustang Mach-Es through August, down 55% from the same period in 2025.
Why is Toyota’s electric SUV suddenly so popular? Toyota updated it where it matters most, with more range, improved charging, a built-in NACS charge port, and a revamped interior.
The lowest-priced 2027 Toyota bZ XLE FWD model starts at $34,980 and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 236 miles. Upgrading to the FWD Plus model, with up to 314 miles of range, costs $37,980.

Inside, the 2027 bZ features Toyota’s updated interior cabin design. The setup includes a new 14″ Toyota Audio Multimedia display screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Toyota now sells three electric SUVs in the US, including the smaller C-HR, starting at $37,080, and the bZ Woodland, starting at $45,380.
