🗳️ One apparently major topic of discussion at Toyota’s most recent annual dealer meeting in Las Vegas was lobbying; specifically, how dealers could lobby their respective state lawmakers ahead of midterm elections in November to discourage tariffs that have lifted auto prices over the last two years. “Obviously, a lot of dealers are one of the biggest employers in their local community. They’re one of the biggest tax contributors to their local community, so they understand that tariffs are a cost that get pushed around,” Dave Christ, Toyota’s North American brand chief, said. 🍁 Canada intends to pressure Stellantis to build something at its idle Brampton Assembly plant, the location where the Jeep Compass was supposed to be manufactured before the company caved to pressure from the U.S. government and relocated production to the States. Canada and Ontario pledged a combined $1 billion investment for the site in 2022, and the compact SUV still hasn’t entered production in North America, though that’s now expected to kick off next year in Illinois. Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said that if the automaker doesn’t commit to a new product at Brampton, “we’ll get our money back.” Complicating all of this, Stellantis announced a memorandum of understanding to sell the facility to defense contractor Roshel last week. 🆕 Volvo is planning an onslaught of new product between now and the start of the next decade—13 cars, specifically, that will include new hybrids and fully electric vehicles, some in new segments, debuting by the end of 2030. [Volvo]
👋 Another enthusiast-minded Acura, the MDX Type S, is being quietly sunsetted due to emissions regulations after the current model year. The Type S incorporates a 355-horsepower turbocharged V6, and joins the manual Integra A-Spec, which has left the market (Acura tells us only temporarily) for ostensibly the same reason. 🛜 The Porsche Cayenne Electric launched with an option for 11-kW wireless charging, but the compatible charging pad wasn’t available for sale—until now. Buyers in Germany and other European markets can now purchase the pad, which costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,000, not including the price of necessary hardware in the vehicle itself. 🌊 Toyota is bringing a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux pickup to Europe in 2028, using a similar powertrain to the Mirai sedan. [InsideEVs]
❓ Adding fuel to the fire that is Seat’s rumored end, Volkswagen said that the Spanish auto brand’s future “beyond the current product cycle is still being evaluated” and that “various scenarios remain possible beyond 2030.” [Reuters]
🚖 European ride-hailing service Bolt plans to add 25,000 Lucid vehicles with self-driving capabilities to its fleet, though the timeline for this initiative is unclear. [Reuters]
