- CATL will provide battery pack technology licensing, production equipment and training for a plant with a planned annual capacity of 1 GWh.

CATL (HKEX: 3750) has signed a cooperation agreement with Egyptian battery manufacturer BME to provide battery pack technology licensing, production equipment and training to support local assembly and production in Egypt.
The Chinese battery maker announced the partnership on Wednesday, saying the companies would build on their intent to cooperate on battery cell procurement to advance local battery pack production.
The plant will be wholly funded and built by BME, with a planned annual capacity of 1 GWh, primarily producing batteries for heavy commercial vehicles.
Under long-term plans, capacity could expand to 5 GWh, with the product range extending to passenger vehicle battery packs and energy storage systems for solar and wind power.
BME was jointly founded by Egyptian commercial vehicle manufacturer MCV and automotive solutions provider Auto D, bringing local automotive industry resources to the partnership.
By adopting CATL’s technology and equipment, BME will supply local automakers directly, filling a gap in Egypt’s domestic battery pack manufacturing, CATL said.
The announcement covered local battery pack assembly and manufacturing but did not mention plans for local cell production. It also did not disclose the plant’s investment amount or a production timeline.
The partnership marks CATL’s latest move to expand its overseas commercial vehicle battery business, supporting local supply capacity by providing partners with technology, equipment and training.
On September 14, CATL launched its Tectrans II commercial vehicle battery solution at the IAA Transportation trade show in Hanover, Germany. The heavy truck version can support a range of up to 1,000 kilometers in its highest-capacity configuration.
During the show, the company also signed a memorandum of understanding with DHL Group to develop green freight corridors in Europe and work with automakers and other partners on purpose-built electric vehicles.
CATL remains the global leader in electric vehicle batteries. Its installed battery volume reached 289.6 GWh in the first 7 months of 2026, up 26.6% from a year earlier, giving it a 39.9% market share, according to South Korean market researcher SNE Research.
CATL continued to lead China’s power battery market but lost market share, while BYD gained ground.
