General Motors (NYSE: GM) brand Buick will roll out the updated Electra E7 plug-in hybrid SUV (sport utility vehicle) in China on September 23, just 5 months after the model’s debut.
Buick announced the date on Weibo on Thursday, without disclosing pricing or specifications for the updated model.
The refresh just 5 months after launch underscores the sense of urgency among joint-venture brands in China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market.
Volkswagen Anhui updated the ID. UNYX 08 last week, also about 5 months after its launch.
The Buick Electra E7 went on sale in China on April 22 with an official starting price of 159,900 yuan ($23,660), or 154,900 yuan with launch incentives.
Earlier this month, Buick introduced limited-time offers for the model, including a 1,000-yuan deposit worth 6,000 yuan toward the purchase price and a trade-in subsidy of up to 7,000 yuan.
With these incentives, the Electra E7’s limited-time starting price for trade-in buyers falls to 149,900 yuan.
The model’s 30,000th vehicle rolled off the production line on September 16, setting what Buick called a production ramp-up record for a joint-venture NEV model in China.
Electra E7 retail sales totaled 4,863 units in August, little changed from 4,911 in July, according to China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data compiled by CnEVPost.
Buick said the model had ranked first in sales among joint-venture NEVs priced above 150,000 yuan for 4 consecutive months.
The current Electra E7 features the Zhenlong plug-in hybrid Pro system, offering a CLTC battery range of 235 kilometers and a combined range of 1,630 kilometers.
The vehicle uses the R6 reinforcement-learning model from Chinese startup Momenta (HKEX: 6880), supporting highway and urban navigation on autopilot (NOA), as well as intelligent parking.
The Electra E7 measures 4,850 mm in length and has a 2,850 mm wheelbase, with a closed front fascia and split headlights.
Electra is Buick’s premium NEV sub-brand, unveiled in April 2025. It is built on the Xiaoyao architecture, which supports battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and extended-range powertrains.
Buick said on September 16 that the 150,000th Electra vehicle had rolled off the production line, and that the sub-brand ranked first in NEV sales among joint ventures.
The sub-brand’s lineup now spans sedans, SUVs and MPVs, with an average transaction price of 257,000 yuan.
The flagship Electra L7 sedan went on sale on September 28, 2025, at limited-time prices ranging from 169,900 yuan to 215,900 yuan.
The flagship Electra Encasa MPV launched on December 5, 2025, with the plug-in hybrid version carrying an official starting price of 439,900 yuan.
The SAIC-GM joint venture plans to launch at least 30 NEV models by 2030, with the Buick Electra L7 to be exported overseas for the first time in October.
