One of the most sought-after options in the auto industry right now is under fire due to catastrophic failure, and it sits right above your head. In 2026 alone, over 500 complaints have been filed across 17 different automakers about exploding panoramic sunroofs. Not failing or cracking sunroofs, exploding ones. Most of the complaints report the glass roofs will spontaneously shatter with no obvious cause, many times at highway speeds, with a sound that resembles a gunshot.
This isn’t a new phenomenon, although it is becoming more prevalent. At present, there’s no real solution to the issue, despite a couple of exhaustive studies being conducted. However, as for the rise in reports of shattered roofs, there is one key factor: modern cars have a lot more glass up there, as old-school sunroofs and moonroofs were usually just a small opening. So, that raises the question: are large panoramic roofs actually less safe than a standard, old-fashioned sunroof? Or, is it merely an issue of more panoramic roofs on the road leading to more failures?
Sunroofs Have Become Much Bigger

Most of us who are of driving age or older remember what the typical sunroof or moonroof in a car looked like back in the day. Typically, it measured around 24 to 30 inches long and 12 to 20 inches wide, and sat over the front row. If it was a sunroof, it was either fixed glass or could be popped up at the rear for ventilation. Moonroofs were about the same size, but could be slid completely back into the car’s roof to provide an open-air space. Currently, roughly half of all cars on the road in the US have some sort of sunroof or moonroof.
Now, the panoramic roof has taken hold as the most popular form of glass roof. Instead of sitting above only the front row in a small section, the modern panoramic roof can stretch from the first row back into the second and, in some cases, even into part of the third row of seats, should the particular model be equipped properly. That means the vast majority of the passenger compartment is treated to a transparent roof, making for a much more enjoyable ride.

However, with the pano roof’s proportions being so large, some issues can come up. For starters, the larger glass surface area is subjected to more road debris — the larger the surface, the more likely it is to be struck by debris. In addition, panoramic glass usually needs to be curved to match the design of the vehicle it’s being installed in, which can introduce weak points within the glass itself, even if no micro or macro cracks are present at time of production.
Another issue with large panes of glass is managing how it responds to changes in temperature, flexing, and repeated mechanical movement. While it doesn’t feel like it, your car’s chassis and body flex minutely virtually all the time. That means the entire body needs to be slightly pliable. Glass, of course, isn’t very flexible. So, one of the downsides of panoramic sunroofs is that, after repeated heating and cooling cycles, flexes, and shifts, the large panoramic glass may very well shatter in conditions where a standard-sized sunroof or moonroof may not.

A study completed by Consumer Reports states that shattered sunroofs have been found across 208 models spanning 35 total automakers. Coupled with the NHTSA’s findings of 17 carmakers and roughly 500 reports, this makes clear that the issue isn’t limited to any one marque — it affects a large majority of them. Additionally, the CR analysis found that about 71% of 859 NHTSA complaints involved a model built in 2011 or after, meaning the phenomenon is more prevalent in newer models, and newer cars increasingly employ large panoramic roofs.
Tempered Glass Can Fail In A Way That Appears Completely Spontaneous

Most modern sunroofs, moonroofs, and panoramic roofs utilize tempered glass. Tempered glass is produced through a process that involves heating the glass to temperatures over 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit, then rapidly cooling the outer edges of the material. This strengthens the glass by a large margin, and makes it much more resistant to cracking, chipping, and shattering when hit. If the tempered glass does shatter, it will break into tiny pieces that typically aren’t sharp enough to cause grave bodily harm.
However, the downside to tempered glass is the manner in which it fails. Normal glass will usually break into a few pieces, but will crack before a break occurs. Anyone who has carelessly thrown a baseball and was unfortunate enough to have it hit a house window will likely remember what it looked like. However, tempered glass shatters instantaneously, many times without warning, even if the smallest stress or crack is introduced.

Road & Track reported on some of these panoramic roof breakage issues and found that even the smallest rocks can cause imperceptible damage to the panoramic roof’s glass. Once the failure is introduced, it’s only a matter of time before other tiny fractures compound to the point of causing mass shattering. It can even happen following a temperature change or a change in pressure. While it may not seem like it to the naked eye, it’s important to note that all this means that panoramic roofs aren’t failing without cause.
That doesn’t make the fact that having your panoramic roof shatter on the highway is any less terrifying, though. The noise from the breakage can be explosive — in some cases sounding like a gunshot — and glass will shower down upon the vehicle’s occupants and throughout the car’s cabin. As a driver, you’ll probably not even know what happened at first, blaming things like kids on an overpass or careless passersby before realizing the panoramic roof itself had failed.
More Problems Mount Without A Concrete Defect

With 1,150 complaints filed with the NHTSA in the last 18 months or so, you’d think there’d be a pinpointed cause to all these panoramic roof failures. Unfortunately, this is not the case at all. The NHTSA set out to try and find the cause by taking a Kia Sorento and digging around with its panoramic roof to try and root out the cause. As of this writing, that study has yielded no results.
The Kia Sorento is particularly important to the panoramic roof story, too. There was an inordinate number of complaints regarding roof failures with the model, prompting the NHTSA to investigate for itself. Years and thousands of fractures later, the NHTSA is no closer to a verdict than before. Following 12 years of litigation, a lawsuit against Kia due to the Sorento’s shatter-happy roof was dismissed due to a lack of evidence. This leaves a lot on the table, as automakers continue to build cars with panoramic roofs that, in many cases, could be inherently flawed.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t been safe from the legal fight, either. Recently, a lawsuit was dismissed because the plaintiffs in the case failed to find sufficient evidence showing that Mercedes-Benz was responsible for panoramic roof failure. During the legal battle, it was found that Mercedes-Benz models equipped with panoramic roofs suffered from a 0.0086% fracture rate. Nissan is also embroiled in roof issues, with a reported 0.2% panoramic roof failure rate.
It seems, then, that an older study completed by Consumer Reports remains highly relevant today — it concluded that glass technology hasn’t kept up with the significant increase in panoramic roof usage across the mass-market automotive industry.
The Fix Might Be Easy

Now, we’re not going to say “all sunroofs are dangerous, and you should do without them,” because that would be a serious case of black-and-white thinking. Instead, we are going to suggest that the solution to the issue may already be available. The answer is laminated glass, which is used primarily on windshields and some side windows. Due to a film being placed over the glass itself, when it shatters, it doesn’t explode like shrapnel. Instead, the breakage is typically confined, and the pieces won’t rain down on the vehicle’s occupants at nearly the same rate.
A couple of automakers are already going this route, such as Tesla and Volvo, but several automakers still rely on tempered glass for their panoramic roofs. The industry at large already knows how to produce laminated glass, so why not simply require that all panoramic roofs use it? That’s up to the automakers and policymakers to decide, as such issues are typically resolved in meetings where budgets are scrutinized and complex legal language prevails.

As for consumers, all you need to do is find out what type of glass your car’s panoramic roof uses, provided you actually have one. You may also want to ask your insurer if accidental sunroof damage/breakage is covered, or if the car’s warranty covers it. But, at the end of the day, sunroofs are nice to have, and can make any car’s cabin a more enjoyable place to be. Roughly half of all cars in the US carry that small but very real chance of spontaneous sunroof shattering, so it may be worth keeping that risk in mind.
