    Automotive

In the 1980s and 90s, it seemed Jeep Cherokees were everywhere. Six generations later, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4 brings back a familiar Jeep model name, but this is a very different Cherokee, even from the one that disappeared just a few years ago. Bigger, quieter, more fuel-efficient and considerably more refined, the new Cherokee feels less like a bare-bones Jeep meant for rugged off-roading, and more like a comfortable everyday crossover that can still handle some tough terrain occasionally. For most buyers today, that’s exactly what a modern Cherokee needs to be.

Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, assisted by two electric motors and producing a combined 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered through an electronically controlled electronic variable transmission and standard four-wheel drive. Around town, the electric assistance gives the Cherokee a pleasantly strong initial response. It steps away from traffic lights smoothly and, thanks to the electric motor assist, feels more energetic at low speeds than its modest horsepower figure might suggest. Push harder for the freeway onramp or a quick overtake, however, and the little four-cylinder needs to work a little harder. The Cherokee isn’t fast, but there’s plenty of performance for everyday driving, and the hybrid system’s real advantage is fuel economy, with an outstanding 37 mpg combined.

Ride quality is also one of the Cherokee Limited’s strongest attributes. The suspension has a comfortable, well-damped feel that absorbs potholes and rough roads without making too much of a fuss, and stays planted in the curves. On the highway, it hums along with a quiet cabin and smooth road manners that make it an excellent long-distance cruiser. The steering is light and accurate for a vehicle of its size, although I wish there was a little more feedback at times. Driven quickly through a series of corners, the Cherokee remains predictable and secure, rather than wallowing like Cherokees of yore. This is an SUV that clearly favors comfort over sportiness, but the handling stability is top notch.

Inside, the Limited continues that more mature personality. The cabin is spacious and modern with more sophistication than the previous model. The 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital instrument display dominating the dashboard offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and the Limited’s upgraded upholstery and trim give the interior an even more upscale appearance. Rear-seat passengers have very good head and leg room, and with over 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and nearly 70 cubic feet with it folded down, the Cherokee is practical enough for family duty or a weekend road trip.

Although it’s not a hardcore off road vehicle, the Cherokee’s four-wheel-drive system provides great traction on wet pavement, snow, gravel and moderate trails. The Wrangler is always there for the rock-taming crowd, but this model is aimed at more street than dirt.
Ultimately, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4 works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it isn’t. It’s not particularly fast or quick-handling, and hardcore Jeep enthusiasts may wish for more off-road hardware, but as an everyday SUV it’s comfortable, quiet, roomy and delivers seriously impressive fuel economy. The hybrid powertrain makes the most sense in urban driving, while the composed ride and spacious cabin make longer road trips easy. After several years away, the Cherokee has returned as a more grown-up machine—still recognizably a Jeep, but a lot more mature and refined than the previous model.
