Strategist: Tariff negotiation clock buys Canada time to protect workers

Aurora Strategy Global president Marcel Wieder says the United States’ plan to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel on Jan. 1, 2027 should be seen as a negotiating clock rather than a final break in Canada‑U.S. trade talks.

The deadline was announced by President Donald Trump on Aug. 24 in a Truth Social post, three days after Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended negotiations and American tariffs of 50 per cent took effect on a narrower list of Canadian goods.

For the automotive and aftermarket sectors, the January date matters. Tariffs on vehicles, parts and steel directly affect repair costs, shop margins, distributor pricing and cross‑border supply chains.

Wieder said the four‑month gap allows both governments to return to the table before the measures hit industries that rely on steady parts flow.

He said on CBC that Washington expected Canada to fold and “overplayed its hand,” and that senators in both parties are unhappy with the tariffs. He said the November midterms could shift the political pressure in Washington and influence how quickly talks resume.

Carney said the United States added last‑minute demands Canada could not accept, including dropping bilingual labelling rules and giving Washington a veto over Canada’s trade negotiations with other countries. He said the U.S. “asked too much and offered too little.”

Canada will introduce its own retaliatory tariffs on Sept. 8, matching the American measures dollar for dollar. The list includes steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics. Carney said the federal government has committed $25 billion to support workers and businesses affected by the dispute.

“They felt that Canada would have folded like a cheap tent, like the Europeans or some of the other markets, and acquiesced to them,” Wieder said. “We didn’t. We stood firm and I think caught them off guard. I think they overplayed their hand and that’s what we’re seeing.”

Wieder said Ottawa’s response will follow the same approach used during COVID‑19, with programs designed to help industries absorb the impact. He said the effects of the tariffs will reach households gradually, leaving a short window for talks to restart before January.

“It’s going to take a little while for them to filter down to the average Canadian. So there is a little bit of time, not much,” he said. “I am hoping that they’ll be able to restart those negotiations sooner rather than later.”
