The 2027 Genesis GV90 is the fourth SUV in the automaker’s lineup, and by the looks of it, it probably won’t be the last. As with just about every other corner of the market, sport-utes and crossovers are big business for luxury buyers, and Genesis knows that game well. In fact, in the mere six years since introducing its first SUV – the GV80 – the automaker’s sales mix has swung away from conventional four-door sedans by more than 80 percent, and the model portfolio will probably continue to support that statistic.
There May Be Fewer Sedans In The Future

Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jose Muñoz addressed Genesis’ future during a round-table discussion with automotive media at the debut of the 2027 GV90. When asked if the luxury brand would continue to offer four-door sedans in a lineup that is increasingly becoming SUV-heavy, Muñoz said that Genesis would continue to watch the current market and forecast trends, but the data clearly suggests one thing.

Although Muñoz wouldn’t elaborate on any future product plans, it’s easy to speculate that some of the company’s slower-selling offerings aren’t up for contract renewal. The G70 sedan, for example, has sold around 7,000 units so far this year, a number that’s better than it was in 2025 but still nowhere near the 20,000-plus of its GV70 SUV sibling. Both the G80 and G90 sell in far smaller numbers than the GV80 and GV80 coupe as well.
Although we won’t write any eulogies just yet, if Genesis were to make any cuts to the team, a lower-volume, lower-profit sedan seems like the obvious choice.
Electrification Will Lead The Charge

The company’s future lineup may be a bit of a question mark, but it’s clear that Genesis’ future is definitely going to be electrified in some form or another. The GV90 was revealed earlier this week with a 310-mile EV range and 657 horsepower courtesy of dual motors, and Muñoz acknowledged that the full-size luxury SUV could potentially spawn a range-extended variant with a gasoline-fired electric generator.
Genesis also revealed the midsize GV80’s new hybrid powertrain last week, with two electric motors mounted in the transmission to provide both power assistance and greater efficiency. The GV80 hybrid will have 350 hp combined from its turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four, a nice little upgrade from the non-electrified SUV’s 300-hp base engine. Furthermore, we can expect decent fuel economy improvements; in the Kia Telluride, which uses similar engines in both base and electrified form as the GV80, the hybrid is good for about 50 percent better fuel economy.

Although we tend to be more interested in luxury and sports sedans rather than crossovers and SUVs, there’s no denying the consumer appeal of the higher-riding body style. Whether it’s because of the elevated driving position or more versatile cargo and passenger-carrying ability, SUVs are here to stay, and thank goodness Genesis makes some good ones.
