Ford is giving Mustang fans something they have not had in more than a decade, a seriously powerful factory-built convertible sitting near the top of the performance hierarchy. The 2027 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible takes the supercharged formula introduced with the Dark Horse SC coupe and removes the roof without dialing back the engine. That means drivers still get a staggering 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque from Ford’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8. In spirit, it feels like the long-awaited follow-up to the Shelby GT500 convertible, only now wrapped in the sharper styling and technology of the seventh-generation Mustang.

Under the hood is the same Predator-family 5.2-liter supercharged V8 found in the Dark Horse SC coupe, paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. There is no manual gearbox, which will undoubtedly disappoint a few traditionalists, but with nearly 800 horsepower headed to the rear wheels, the rapid-fire dual-clutch transmission makes plenty of sense. Better still, dropping the top should make Ford’s variable exhaust system considerably more entertaining. Normal, Quiet, Sport, and Sport+ settings remain available, although anyone spending six figures on a supercharged Mustang convertible probably will not leave it in Quiet mode for very long.

Where the convertible begins to separate itself from the coupe is in its personality. Ford has softened the springs and stabilizer bars while recalibrating the MagneRide suspension to create a car aimed more at high-speed road trips than chasing lap records. The convertible also skips some of the coupe’s more hardcore equipment, including the Track Package and carbon-ceramic brake setup. That is not necessarily a drawback. A nearly 800-horsepower Mustang that is a little more compliant on a rough back road could prove to be the more enjoyable choice for buyers who have no intention of spending their weekends clipping apexes at a road course.

Ford also made aerodynamic changes rather than simply cutting the roof off the coupe and calling the job finished. The convertible’s unique decklid requires different rear-wing mounting hardware, while airflow changes around the soft top led engineers to revise the hood venting to maintain the desired aerodynamic balance. A magnesium brace connects the front shock-tower area to the firewall for additional rigidity. It is the sort of engineering work that matters with this much power on tap, especially in a car designed to be driven quickly with an open cabin and less inherent structural stiffness than its fixed-roof sibling.

The new Precision Purple exterior color might be one of the biggest attention grabbers when the Dark Horse SC Convertible starts appearing on the street. The pearlescent finish has a color-shifting quality and joins a broader palette of available colors, while buyers can choose interiors including Black Onyx and the lighter Space Gray. The latter seems particularly appropriate for a convertible that may spend plenty of time parked with the top down under a summer sun. More importantly, the Dark Horse SC does not lose the aggressive visual presence that makes the coupe stand out, so lowering the roof has not turned Ford’s supercharged Mustang into a tame boulevard cruiser.

Pricing remains the big unanswered question. The 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC coupe already starts above $108,000 when mandatory charges are factored in, so it is reasonable to expect the convertible to land comfortably above that figure, potentially somewhere around the mid-$110,000 range depending on final pricing and equipment. Ford plans to open orders in fall 2026, with customer deliveries expected to begin in spring 2027. That puts the Dark Horse SC Convertible in rare territory for a Mustang, but there is also nothing else quite like it. Nearly 800 supercharged horsepower, rear-wheel drive, a folding roof, and a thunderous V8 soundtrack make this less of a track weapon than the coupe and more of a very fast, very loud American grand tourer. For some Mustang buyers, that may be exactly the point.
