The biggest car news and reviews, no BS

Our free daily newsletter sends the stories that really matter directly to you, every weekday.

Unlike 30 years ago, there’s nothing necessarily forcing the automakers that race endurance prototypes to sell their wares to deep-pocketed clients. Still, some do anyway. Ferrari and Aston Martin make versions of their Le Mans Hypercars for amateurs to take to the track, and Porsche crafted a one-off, road-legal version of its 963 inspired by Count Rossi’s 917 to sell to a Mr. Roger Penske. Cadillac appears to be thinking about doing stuff like this, too, but it’s not making any commitments yet.

This is the V-One. Cadillac calls it a “concept study,” obviously based off the V-Series.R LMDh. In the company’s own words, it “explores how competition hardware can be translated into a driver-focused experience.” On the surface, it’s basically the same machine that earned Caddy the 2023 IMSA team and drivers’ titles wearing different colors. Inside, though, you’ll notice it’s much more friendly to us non-racing drivers, with simplified controls, intentional design that sacrifices some function for aesthetics, and a singular bucket seat that is actually upholstered.

Much of the running gear here is the same as what the competition version deploys, with an 830-horsepower V8 hybrid powertrain, pushrod suspension, and all of the aero components you’re recognize from race day. The wheels are unique, and Cadillac says the gradient on the body isn’t a wrap, but was sprayed by hand.

    General Motors

So, the V-One is basically a V-Series R with creature comforts. It isn’t a clean-sheet design that takes sports prototype tech and refines and optimizes it for road use, like the Ferrari F80 or Aston Martin Valkyrie. It also isn’t, itself, a road-legal, homologation special-type version of a race car, like the 963 RSP. While I support the idea of Cadillac selling a version of its Le Mans racer to entities other than racing teams, as of now, this is just a tease on display at The Quail. Let’s hope it becomes more someday.
