The Lamborghini Diablo has never been a car that needed much help getting attention, but Eccentrica has found another way to make the 1990s supercar even harder to ignore. Following its coupe-based V12 restomod, the boutique company is now taking the roof off with the Eccentrica V12 Roadster, a thoroughly re-engineered interpretation of the early Diablo that blends its unmistakable wedge-shaped character with modern materials, revised aerodynamics, and updated mechanical hardware. The finished car will make its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week on August 14.

Eccentrica describes the Roadster as having a 1990s soul with modern precision, which gets right to the heart of what the company is trying to accomplish. More than 3,500 new components are involved in the transformation, so this is far more extensive than simply restoring an old Diablo and fitting a few contemporary parts. The chassis incorporates a carbon-reinforced steel structure, while the exterior body panels are made from carbon fiber. Eccentrica has also reshaped the aerodynamic elements, revised the rear wing, and fitted lighter wheels to reduce unsprung weight while preserving the dramatic proportions that made the original Diablo such a poster-car favorite.

Thankfully, the modernization effort has not resulted in an electric motor or complicated hybrid system replacing the main attraction. Sitting behind the cabin is a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V12 producing 550 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a six-speed gated manual transmission, giving the Roadster the kind of mechanical interaction that has become increasingly difficult to find in modern exotic cars. Eccentrica has also remapped the engine management system for sharper throttle response, and despite losing its fixed roof, the Roadster is said to retain the coupe’s claimed 208-mph top speed.

That combination is what makes the Eccentrica especially interesting in a restomod market that has become increasingly crowded. The company is not chasing the four-digit horsepower figures now common among boutique hypercars. Instead, the focus appears to be on making the Diablo more precise and usable without sanding away the analog personality that made it special in the first place. A naturally aspirated V12, a gated manual gearbox, and an open cabin already sound like a recipe for sensory overload, and the extensive use of carbon fiber and updated chassis engineering should make the experience considerably more polished than piloting an original Diablo Roadster.

As expected, very few people will ever have the opportunity to put one in their garage. Eccentrica plans to build only 19 examples of the V12 Roadster, with each tailored to its owner’s preferences. Pricing has not been announced, but with the rarity of suitable donor Diablos, the scale of the re-engineering involved, and the bespoke nature of the project, exclusivity is clearly part of the equation. For collectors who love the outrageous personality of a Lamborghini Diablo but want something built with modern precision, the Eccentrica V12 Roadster could be one of the more fascinating restomods to emerge from Monterey Car Week.
