    ‘There’s A Mustang For Everyone’

No matter how many times you check the leaderboard, one icon remains undisputed at the top: the Ford Mustang. It doesn’t just lead the pack—it routinely crushes the competition, often outperforming the entire non-premium sports car segment combined.

This isn’t a temporary streak; it’s an enduring legacy built over decades of relentless passion. For twenty straight years, through every economic shift and changing trend, the Ford Mustang has consistently won over 45,000 drivers annually in the US alone, and it’s charging full throttle toward 50,000 sales in 2026. What is the secret behind this immortal machine’s unbreakable bond with automotive enthusiasts? Let’s take a look under the hood.

Still The Main Character Of American Cars

As far as US-made coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, and convertibles go, the Tesla Model Y sells more units in a year than the Mustang. The Ford F-150 remains our top-selling vehicle overall, American-made or not. Be that as it may, we would argue that the Mustang is what you might call the main character of American cars, and not just in the sports segment.

In the past, we’ve covered how the Mustang conquered the 00s by sticking it out while other automakers got cold feet. The Chevy Camaro, for instance, took most of the decade off, with the fourth generation being retired after the 2002 model year and not returning until the 2010 model year. The Dodge Charger was nowhere to be found from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s.

This is not to say that the Mustang can’t win on its own merits. But generation after generation has fallen in love with the Mustang in large part because we’ve always had a Mustang with which to fall in love. Our friends at American Muscle recently ran a poll finding that the ‘Stang was the number one gateway car (meaning the car that transformed you from driver to enthusiast) for every single generation surveyed, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z.

It’s Another Banner Year For America’s Pony Car

Here are some quick stats on the year the Ford Mustang is having right now.

    • Mustang sales were up 15.7% year-over-year in July, with Ford’s director of US sales Rob Kaffl reporting 32,131 units sold for the year so far.
    • Ford sold 3,406 Mustangs in July alone.
    • The Mustang captured 58% of the non-premium sports car segment through July.
    • The Mustang’s sales bump comes in light of an overall dip for the brand, with Ford selling 10% fewer units overall in July 2026 than it did in July 2025.
    • The Mustang Mach-E saw a 50% YTD drop in sales for 2026, selling fewer than half as many units as its gas-powered sibling.

If we were to place bets, we think the smart money is on the Mustang outliving just about everything else Ford sells at the moment, including the F-150. That might sound like a reach, but think about it. There may come a day when gas-powered pickups have been completely phased out for more practical electric trucks (whether the customer likes it or not), but the enthusiast scene will always have a place for a V8 Mustang.

Why Ford Keeps Betting On The Mustang (And We Keep Buying It)

    Ford Mustang EcoBoost TLD EditionFord

The Ford Mustang represents a rare nameplate that has remained true to its initial vision despite more than half a century of updates and reiterations. You don’t need to look any farther than the battery-powered Dodge Charger Daytona to see how rare this approach is becoming.

Lee Iacocca envisioned the Mustang as an affordable, highly-customizable entry-level sports car, aimed largely at young drivers who wanted something stylish and powerful. Over 60 years since Ford let you pack a portable TV into your pony car, the Mustang is still an affordable, highly customizable entry-level sports car, with massive appeal for young drivers. It’s a half-century example of sticking to a winning formula.

Even the critically-panned malaise-era Mustang II was a hot seller, moving over 1.1 million units from the 1974 to the 1978 model years. It might not be anyone’s favorite ‘Stang in retrospect, but, as an Oil Crisis compromise, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter-era drivers didn’t hate this car back then as much as collectors do today.

    There’s A Mustang For Everyone

The Mustang is available across a number of segments, from the entry-level to the supercar tier. Here are the base prices on some key models for 2026.

    • Mustang EcoBoost Fastback – $32,995
    • Mustang GT Fastback – $46,800
    • Mustang Dark Horse – $64,080
    • Mustang Dark Horse Supercharged – $106,090
    • Mustang GTD – $327,960

Any one of these models is a valid entry into the world of pony cars. The 315-horsepower EcoBoost might not pack a V8, but it will get you to 60 mph in just under five seconds, and it’s arguably the most practical of the bunch. The GT offers real performance at a fair price, with a 5.0-liter V8 cranking out 480 hp for 4.2-second takeoffs.

The Dark Horse cranks out 500 horses at the entry-level, hitting 60 mph in three seconds and change. At the top of the ladder, the Dark Horse SC and the GTD are simply more car than anyone needs, but the Jay Lenos and Jerry Seinfelds of the world can enjoy 795 to 815 horses courtesy of a 5.2-liter V8 Predator engine, clearing 60 mph in as little as 2.7 seconds in the GTD.

This isn’t even getting into classics and collector models, like the Mustang Bullitt for the 2019 and 2020 model years, built in honor of the Steve McQueen classic. When you say that your dream car is a Mustang, the only response you can expect is, “Yeah, but which one?”

In The Market For A Mustang?

    Ford Mustang Dark Horse SCFord

If you’re looking to buy a brand-new Mustang, it’s easy to make a case for the 2026 GT Fastback as the smartest purchase in the current lineup. We can argue that the EcoBoost model is a legitimate pony car, but when you daydream about owning a Mustang, you’re usually daydreaming about eight cylinders. The base GT model gets you there at a fair price.

If you’re going second-hand, we’ve got some favorites to recommend.

2000 Ford Mustang GT New Edge

The 2000 Ford Mustang GT is powered by a 260 hp V8 engine.Ford

Powered by a 4.6-liter V8 with an available five-speed manual transmission and 260 horses under the hood, the New Edge ‘Stang brought the pony car into the modern age with 5.5-second takeoffs, which matches an entry-level Mustang even today. Our marketplace sees these cars selling for as little as $13,999, though you may need to shop around to find one with low mileage at a fair price.

    2007 Mustang Shelby GT500

    2007 – 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – front 3/4 profileFord

Powered by a 5.4-liter V8 with a six-speed manual transmission and 500 hp, the Shelby GT500 was a flag-bearer for the muscle car segment at a time when nobody else wanted to build one. We were able to find a 70,032-mile instance on our marketplace selling for $31,587.

    2018 Ford Mustang GT

2018 Ford Mustang GT finished in orange with black interiorFord

2018 was a refresh model year for the Mustang, with the 5.0-liter V8 getting a power bump to 460 hp. This is the bargain-hunter’s pony car, combining a generous range of modern features like keyless entry and Bluetooth connectivity with a powerful engine at a used-car price. The best deal we can find on one of these is a 56,970-mile instance selling for $28,990.

Note that all the listings provided above are just to give you an idea of what you can expect to spend. You’ll want to run your own search to see what’s available in your area, and in your price range.

We could spend all day listing our favorite Mustangs (and we have, more than once). We’re willing to bet that you have a favorite of your own, and that seems to be the secret to Ford’s success in the pony car segment. Everyone knows this car, and it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like it.
