Ford Gives Every F-150 A V8 Option To Fight Ram’s Hemi Resurgence

We’re still enjoying peak 2026 summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but 2027 model-year vehicles from several automakers are already reaching dealership lots. America’s best-selling vehicle for the last billion years, the Ford F-Series, is still rolling through 2026. But a 2027 order guide recently posted online reveals some interesting changes happening under the hood of the F-150. And we suspect Ram has something to do with that.

Ford has long pushed its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 as the engine of choice for its popular pickup truck. But the automaker is giving V8 fans with fat bank accounts a new reason to smile.

According to a 2027 order guide recently posted to f150gen14.com, Ford is changing up its engine lineup for a few F-150 trim levels. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that served as the entry-level engine is officially gone. Replacing it is the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, essentially the same engine with a bit more displacement. It makes quite a bit more power though – 400 horsepower in other applications such as the Explorer ST and Platinum trims. By comparison, the 2.7-liter mill pumped out 325 hp for the F-150.

However, it’s important to note that the order guide doesn’t list horsepower ratings. It’s possible this engine could be retuned for work in the larger F-150, perhaps emphasizing more torque with less horsepower, or a thicker power band that hits lower in the rev range. It’s a distinct possibility, because plugging in the 3.0-liter engine as-is would give the F-150 three engine choices with similar outputs. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter V8 also make 400 hp.

Speaking of the 5.0 engine, here’s the good news for fans of no replacement for displacement. The V8 is back as an option for the snazziest of F-150 trims, the King Ranch and Platinum. Previously, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost was the only choice, either in standard or hybrid format. As previously mentioned, power figures aren’t mentioned in the 2027 order guide. But if things carry over from 2026, the V8 will match the EcoBoost V6 with 400 hp. Torque will be vastly different though, with the V8 topping out at 410 pound-feet versus 500 torques with the turbo-six.

Why Is Ford Offering A Less Powerful Engine Option?

Technically speaking, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is the range-topping engine in the F-150 lineup, Raptor variants notwithstanding. It outclasses the V8 in torque, and if buyers choose the hybrid version, power and torque increase even further. However, Ram’s decision to end the V8 completely in its half-ton lineup showed just how much American truck buyers crave their V8s, even if they aren’t the best engine choice by the numbers. Sales tanked, and when Ram announced the Hemi’s return, orders immediately went up. Now, Ram sales are climbing while Chevy and Ford trucks sales are falling.

There’s also something to be said about how the power is made and sent to the wheels. Some would argue that modern turbocharged engines still suffer from some measure of turbo lag, which can make chores like towing a little more of a challenge. The added complexity of turbocharged engines can also be a factor for some, and then there’s just the personal preference of having more cylinders under the hood. In any case, we’ve contacted Ford to confirm the order guide selections and ask about the expanded V8 options.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Ford never removed the V8 option from its entire half-ton lineup like Ram did, but we have no doubt company executives watched that whole drama unfold with keen interest. With relaxed emissions regulations now in effect for US automakers, we suspect Ford has more room to breathe with its 5.0-liter V8 and can offer it to more buyers.

And let’s be honest – King Ranch and Platinum trims can easily reach well into $70,000 territory. These customers are big spenders who may prefer V8 power to the EcoBoost six, and as a result might choose a well-optioned Lariat instead of the more expensive premium trim. For what amounts to a flip of the switch on the assembly line, Ford can give buyers the cylinders they want. For a little while longer, anyway.

We’re keeping an eye on Ford for 2027 F-150 announcements. We’ll jump in with an update if new information becomes available.
