Audi Boss Promises The Hybrids You Want Are Right Around The Corner

One of the dangers of going all-in on electric was that if it failed you could fall behind on the models that buyers wanted instead. That’s exactly what has happened to Audi in the US. It has no hybrids or plug-in hybrids which is at least partly to blame for sales down 17% for the first half of 2026 while its electric vehicle sales make up just 2.5% of its total.

Now hybrid Audis are coming to the US, and though it won’t be soon, it might be a lot sooner than you’d think.

New Boss Says Hybrids Are Coming To America

Speaking at the launch of the Q9 three-row SUV, Audi of America President Vito Paladino said there are more hybrids coming. “We will have hybrids in our lineup,” he told Automotive News. The company’s new US boss added that “we’re looking at which segments, which models do we need to further extend the offering.”

We already know about two of Audi’s upcoming hybrids, but neither one is likely to make a significant difference to the bottom line. The Nuvolari is one, a 1,000 horsepower supercar with a Lamborghini engine that will be limited to just a few hundred worldwide. The RS 5 is another, and while it won’t be as exclusive as the Nuvolari, it won’t exactly be common. Both of those vehicles are set to arrive in the US sometime next year.

Hybrid models make up nearly 20 percent of US new vehicle sales, and that’s expected to grow. It’s more than double the share of electric vehicles, and Audi’s own take rate is a fraction of that.

Audi’s biggest competitors offer plug-in hybrids. BMW has six models, including its X5 SUV, while Mercedes-Benz lists nine, including its GLC and GLE SUVs. At Lexus, all but two of its gas-powered models offer a hybrid, PHEV, or both.

How Quickly Can Audi Catch Up With The Competition?

The problem for Audi is that many of its models are brand-new and launched without hybrid power. The automaker expected EVs to capture that buyer, which hasn’t panned out in the US. That could make it near-impossible, or at least very expensive to go hybrid in a hurry, because it would mean big changes in the middle of a model cycle. Even the new Q7 and Q9 weren’t envisioned with hybrid powertrains, although the V6 and V8 motors they do have will resonate with a large portion of American buyers.

Fortunately for Audi in the US, its parent company has been more aggressive with PHEVs. Nearly all of its vehicles sold in Europe offer some sort of hybrid power. “Because of our global portfolio, there’s opportunities that you don’t have to wait for a refresh,” Paladino said. “If we see the business opportunity, which we do in this case here, we’re willing to do the right thing,” Paladino said.

While Paladino did not specify what models could get electric assistance or when, expect some of its bestsellers to get the tech sooner rather than later. Think the new Q5 — which is likely getting a PHEV RS Q5 variant.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters

Audi is a company that built its brand on high-tech. “Vorsprung durch Technik,” or progress through technology, has been the company’s slogan for decades. Being caught-out on hybrids is more than a little bit embarrassing, then, especially as the brand has pledged to get back to those Vorsprung ways.

But Audi USA won’t be left out in the cold because, globally, Audi has been following that slogan. It has the hybrids ready to go, they just need to be certified for sale in the US. The question for Audi, then, is which models to put through the EPA’s tests, and how quickly to do it. The result, though, could end up being more about image than actual numbers of sales.
