Abt Celebrates Its 130th Anniversary With A 1,000-HP Audi RS Q8

Abt Sportsline, the German tuner best known for its enhanced Volkswagen and Audi products, is celebrating a big anniversary this year. All the way back in 1896, Johann Baptist Abt took over a local blacksmith shop, crafting horseshoes and developing novel enhancements like ski-skids for carriages to improve stability in deep snow. Now, 130 years later, the “Sportsline” company that bears his name has gone through many different changes, but that doesn’t make the anniversary any less special.

Big Power For A Big SUV

Part of a trio of anniversary specials that kicked off with the RS 6-LE 800, the latest celebration comes in the form of a modified RS Q8. Although no slouch from the factory with 631 horsepower and 627 pound-feet, the SUV was merely a jumping-off point for ABT. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 became the target of the company’s Power R performance upgrade, which includes ABT-designed turbochargers, intercooler, and a water-methanol injection system to keep the engine frosty.

When in use, the water-meth system unlocks the full 1,000 hp available from the engine, and it’s operated by the myAbt app, which works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to bring tuning right to the dashboard.

In addition to the power adders, Abt Sportsline adjusted the RS Q8’s four-corner air suspension, adding a custom tune for the 48-volt active roll stabilization to kill excessive body motions and improve high-speed stability. And the LE 1000 is capable of some very insane high speeds, hitting 199 mph at the top end. That’s an improvement of about 10 mph compared to the standard RS Q8, which clearly was no slouch in the first place.

With speeds like that, keeping airflow managed is a big priority, and luckily, it’s one area where Abt Sportsline shines. The RS Q8-LE 1000 gets a full catalog of body mods rendered in exposed, matte-finished carbon fiber. That includes the front lip spoiler, bumper inserts, and vents on the hood and fenders to help keep underbody turbulence and heat to a minimum. An aggressive rear diffuser and roof spoiler improve stability further. Potentially most notable is the addition of 23-inch wheels in the same “Neodym” finish that we saw on the RS 6 anniversary special.

Abt also invested some energy into the cabin of the RS Q8, giving it lots more matte carbon, on the shift paddles and console gear selector for example. The dashboard and seats also get subtle carbon accents, with Alcantara on the steering wheel and embroidery on the upholstery featuring the Abt logo and LE 1000 branding. An anniversary coin on the center console displays the special edition’s serial number rounds out the most obvious changes.

The price for all this anniversary goodness is 165,000 euros, plus another 20,000 for installation. That 185,000-euro total amounts to nearly $213,000 at current exchange rates, a sum that doesn’t even include the base vehicle. Add in a zero-option RS Q8 to the tune of $140,995 and you’ll be left with a $354,000 super-SUV. That’s the price of a very well-optioned Lamborghini Urus, which now offers plug-in hybrid power and flexibility. Still, the Abt Audi RS Q8-LE 1000 is somehow more eye-catching than the raging bull, so we don’t blame a single one of the 30 buyers for the limited-production anniversary celebration.
