- A week ago, Xpeng apologized for air spring failures on the X9 in high temperatures and extended the warranty on the related system.
- A number of X9 owners in Chongqing had reported air suspension failures while driving in hot weather.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) is recalling 33,473 X9 electric MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) in China, as the front air springs of these vehicles may slowly leak, affecting handling in extreme cases.
The recall will begin on August 28 and covers X9s produced between August 8, 2023, and August 11, 2025, according to an announcement released by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on Friday.
Some of the vehicles within the recall scope have reduced airtightness in their front air springs due to fluctuations in the manufacturing process, according to the announcement.
After prolonged use in hot and humid environments, the front air springs may slowly leak, triggering a warning light and text alerts.
In extreme cases, the issue could affect the vehicle’s handling, posing a safety hazard, the announcement said.
Xpeng will replace the front air spring strut assemblies with improved ones for vehicles within the recall scope free of charge. Some vehicles have already had the improved parts installed and do not need another replacement.
The recall comes just over a week after Xpeng publicly apologized over the issue. On July 16, the company said it had noticed that some X9 users encountered air spring failures in extreme scenarios such as high temperatures, and expressed its deep apologies.
Xpeng announced at the time that it would extend the warranty on the X9’s front air spring system to 8 years or 160,000 kilometers, covering the front air spring strut assemblies, air supply unit, air supply unit solenoid valve box, and air tank, with the warranty unaffected by changes of ownership.
Earlier, a number of X9 owners in Chongqing reported that their vehicles experienced air suspension leaks and one-sided or full body sagging while driving in hot weather, with some vehicles unable to drive normally. Chongqing saw temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius at the time.
After Xpeng’s apology statement, some consumers questioned why a recall was not initiated for the widespread common failures. The recall is a response to those calls.
The X9 is Xpeng’s flagship MPV, which was initially launched in January 2024, when only the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version was available.
In November 2025, Xpeng introduced an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of the X9. In March of this year, Xpeng launched the 2026 model year of the all-electric X9, with a starting price of 359,800 yuan ($45,600).
On June 25, Xpeng announced that cumulative deliveries of the X9 had exceeded 60,000 units.
In the first half of this year, Xpeng delivered 16,859 X9s, up 53.70% year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
In June, it delivered 2,584 units of the model, up 40.43% year-on-year and up 20.02% from May.
