After years of post-pandemic madness, the car market is finally coming back down to earth. Rising living costs, high interest rates, and tighter budgets are putting pressure on prices, especially in the used market, where luxury SUVs that once commanded huge premiums are now appearing at auctions looking like bargains.

But while big SUVs lose value, another corner of the market is quietly gaining momentum. Sporty, analog machines built for enthusiasts are becoming more desirable as automakers move away from cars that prioritize screens, sensors, and electrification over driving feel. With fewer new options available, collectors are starting to appreciate what these forgotten performers offer.

Prices and market data were accurate at the time of writing but are subject to change. The article is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered financial or investment advice.

Where Used Car Values Are Defying Depreciation

Average new vehicle transaction prices have finally slipped back below the $50,000 mark in the second quarter aftercrossing that thresholdfor the first time near the end of last year, according to Cox Automotive data. But the cooling isn’t limited to new cars. Used vehicles are also seeing values soften, with full-size pickup trucks and SUVs among the hardest hit, likely the result of higher fuel prices making these big, thirsty machines less appealing to some buyers.

Black Book, which publishes data on wholesale pricing trends, showed that for the week ending June 13, 2026, wholesale vehicle values declined 0.24 percent overall. However, not every segment followed the same path. While the Full-Size SUV and Pickup segment declined 1.03 percent, Premium Sporty Cars bucked the trend with gains, particularly in the two- to eight-year-old range (+0.21 percent), extending a robust run in which sporty and enthusiast vehicles have risen in value in 14 of the last 16 weeks.

That divergence in values between sporty cars and the broader market continues a trend that began during the pandemic, when enthusiast-focused vehicles started separating themselves from the rest.

Auction demand tells a similar story. Black Book reported the auction conversion rate improved to 62 percent for the week ending June 13, up three percentage points from the previous week. The solid conversion rate coupled with the falling values shows that buyers are actively participating but remain highly selective. They’re likely favoring well-conditioned, desirable inventory while showing caution on everything else.

But knowing which specific cars have already crossed the threshold from depreciation to appreciation — and which luxury SUVs have hit their floor — is where the real opportunity lies.

The Future Classics Already Showing Their Value

The vehicles below share a set of traits that explain why the market is rewarding them: naturally aspirated engines at or near extinction, manual gearboxes, and driving experiences that no amount of software can replicate. They also share another trait — windows of affordability that are closing.

    2008-2013 BMW M3:The Only V8 M3 Ever Built, And It’s Still Under $30,000

    The BMW M3 E90 is powered by a glorious four-liter V8 engine.BMW

The fourth-generation BMW M3 is exactly the kind of raw, analog performance machine enthusiasts worry they’ll never see again. Offered as a coupe, convertible, or sedan, this generation remains the only one to pack a V8 under the hood, which makes it a standout. The 414-hp 4.0-liter V8 screams all the way to an 8,300-rpm redline, delivering the sort of high-revving character that’s now largely reserved for six-figure exotics.

Better yet, BMW paired the engine with an available six-speed manual, adding another tick to the enthusiast wish list. Throw in a beautifully balanced chassis and styling that has aged remarkably well, and it’s easy to see why values have remained strong. High-mileage examples with well over 100,000 miles can be found from around $15,000, while limiting your search to roughly 70,000 miles still turns up plenty of clean cars for under $30,000.

2006-2013 Chevrolet Corvette Z06:The Car Enthusiasts Are Finally Rediscovering – Before Prices Catch Up

    The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06 has a naturally-aspirated, seven-liter V8 that revs to 7,000 rpm. Perfect for track days.Chevrolet

The C6 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has spent years living in the shadow of its successors. Buyers in recent years have gravitated toward the more refined C7 or the latest mid-engine C8, leaving the C6 quietly overlooked despite offering one of the purest driving experiences in Corvette history. That’s changing. Powered by the legendary 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with 500 hp, the Z06 delivers explosive performance without turbochargers, hybrid assistance, or a screen-heavy cockpit getting between you and the road.

You also get a standard six-speed manual, lightweight chassis, and hydraulic steering, all of which make it the kind of machine enthusiasts are increasingly chasing as newer performance cars grow more complex. The market has started to notice, too. High-mileage examples with more than 100,000 miles can still be found from around $30,000, but if you’re shopping for one with fewer than 70,000 miles, expect to spend at least $40,000. Buyers on tighter budgets may also want to consider a Chevrolet Camaro of the same vintage.

2009-2024 Nissan GT-R:Rarer Than You Realize

The R35 Nissan GT-R spent nearly two decades embarrassing cars that cost much more, yet for years the car somehow became the performance bargain everyone took for granted. Buyers chased the latest machinery while Nissan quietly refined the GT-R until production finally ended.

Now that it’s gone, enthusiasts are rediscovering just how special Godzilla really was. A hand-built twin-turbocharged V6 with close to 500 hp, coupled with a lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, still make it devastatingly quick by modern standards.

Volumes were also extremely low (Porsche sells more 911s in a year than the GT-R’s entire production run), and that scarcity has helped the GT-R remain remarkably resilient against depreciation. Low-mileage, unmodified examples are commanding strong money, and some early cars are now trading close to their original sticker price as collectors recognize their significance. If you’re shopping for one, expect to pay around $60,000 for examples with more than 100,000 miles, while cars showing fewer than 70,000 miles typically start at around $70,000 and climb quickly for pristine, unmodified examples. A cheaper alternative that definitely won’t disappoint is the Nissan 370Z.

The Big Luxury Bargains Hiding In Plain Sight

BMW X7:Near-New Luxury At Mainstream SUV Money

While enthusiast-focused performance cars continue to buck the depreciation curve, buyers after something more practical can save big in the used market, especially if they’re shopping for a full-size luxury SUV. Few models illustrate that better than the BMW X7. Introduced for the 2019 model year and refreshed for 2023, BMW’s largest SUV delivers three rows of seating, a plush cabin, and surprisingly sharp road manners, yet it has shed value at a pace that should make used-car shoppers smile. That depreciation creates a tempting opportunity.

The updated 2023 X7, now three years old – meaning it still carries the balance of BMW’s four-year factory warranty – can be found with around 50,000 miles for roughly $45,000, or about 55% of the original starting price. Buying a slightly newer model doesn’t necessarily mean spending a lot more, either. Plenty of 2024 examples with 50,000 miles or less are listed for around $50,000, offering near-new luxury for the price of a well-optioned mainstream SUV.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer:A $90,000 Luxury SUV You Can Now Buy Used for Under $60k

An action shot of the 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer LJeep

If you’re hunting for one of the biggest bargains in today’s used market, look no further than the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Not long ago, Jeep’s flagship full-size SUV carried a starting price brushing up against $90,000. Today, it’s possible to find lightly used examples – some still covered by part of the factory warranty – for roughly half that. That’s an astonishing drop for a luxury SUV loaded with premium materials, three rows of seating, and enough tech to make a flagship German rival sweat.

Launched for the 2022 model year, the Grand Wagoneer’s original lofty sticker price left dealers with swelling inventories, prompting Jeep to slash prices over time. The biggest reset came with2026’s mid-cycle refresh, when the base Grand Wagoneer replaced the mechanically related Wagoneer and the entry price dropped from $84,945 for 2025 to $63,995. Unsurprisingly, used values followed suit. Today, even 2025 models with fewer than 20,000 miles can be found with asking prices below $60,000.

Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class:Loses 40% Of Its Value In Three Years, Which Is Exactly Why You Should Buy One Used

    2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 ExteriorMercedes-Benz

America’s big luxury SUVs generally hold their value better than their German rivals. The Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator typically lose around 30 to 40 percent of their value during the first three years, while the Lexus LX performs even better, shedding only about 20 percent over the same period. That makes the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class an appealing alternative for bargain hunters.

Mercedes’ flagship SUV tends to lose more than 40 percent of its value after three years, creating an opportunity to pick up a seriously luxurious family hauler for a fraction of its original sticker.

A quick search of the classifieds turns up plenty of 2023 GLS-Class examples with fewer than 70,000 miles priced from around $45,000, or a little more than half their original MSRP. That’s a tempting proposition for buyers who want S-Class levels of comfort, three rows of seating, and effortless highway cruising without the eye-watering new-car price. Just be sure to budget for Mercedes-Benz maintenance, because the purchase price may be discounted, but the cost of servicing rarely is.

Depreciation can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on which side of the transaction you’re on. Whether you’re chasing an analog future classic or a luxury SUV that’s already taken its biggest financial hit, there are plenty of smart buys out there. Just don’t let market trends make the decision for you. Buy the car you’ll actually enjoy driving, and any savings – or appreciation – will simply be a bonus.
