Alpine’s Electric Porsche Cayman Rival Will Beat Gas A110 ‘In All Areas’

The all-electric Alpine A110 development vehicle made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, complete with the founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Duke of Richmond, in the passenger seat. A BWT Alpine Formula One Team driver piloted the future third-generation A110 up the Goodwood Hillclimb course.

Called the A110 Future, the sports car shows the technologies being developed for Alpine’s future Alpine Performance Platform (APP)-based electric sports car. It looks fast, but Alpine CEO Philippe Krief promises it “will be better than the current A110.”

Speaking to Autocar, Krief says the firm’s development brief was to “beat the [current] A110 in all areas that made it a success, such as the feeling of lightness. The new platform allows us to develop a perfect integration between mechanics and electronics.” He also revealed that the A110 Future will sustain “maximum speed and maximum lateral acceleration” for at least 20 minutes.

France’s sports car will be here soon.

The reason Alpine is so excited and confident it can do exactly what it wants is that the A110 Future is built on a whole new platform, with 95% of the components being new and not shared with brands within the Renault Group. “This will make the car at least as good as the current one – and I do believe it will be even better in terms of this kind of performance,” Krief says.

The fact that Alpine is using so many new components should help combat current criticisms of the A110’s interior being bland and made up using parts from other cars. On that subject, Alpine is remarkably upfront and honest, and has a clear direction.

“The current A110 is an extraordinary sports car, but the cockpit is not that extraordinary. We’ve done huge, huge work in order to have a timeless cockpit – not one where you will find a lot of screens but something very intuitive, where the driver is at the center.”

    – Philippe Krief, chief executive officer, Alpine.

If it sounds like Alpine is going upscale, that does appear to be the case. When Autocar asked Krief how big he wants the brand to be, he said, “We are not Ferrari, of course, and we are not aiming to be Porsche: we aim to be more niche than Porsche, because we want to preserve the exclusivity and the profitability for our models.”

The Electric A110 Will Have A Long Future

While the new platform is engineered for agility and intensive use, it’s also modular. The demonstration car is a two-seat coupe, but plans call for a 2+2 seater and coupe versions to be offered. Alpine plans to use the new platform for at least two generations of A110, and somewhere near the middle of its life cycle there will be an extreme version. As the platform has the option designed into it, we suspect the extreme version will be all-wheel-drive.

There are no power figures available yet, but we know the all-electric A110 is running with a dual-motor setup driving the rear wheels that can spin up to 21,500 rpm, and features Alpine’s new Active Torque Vectoring 2.0 system. It also features Wheel Slip Torque Control, aiming to reduce understeer at corner entry and mid-corner, managing load transfer and torque under acceleration and lift-off.
