Tesla’s lineup in the US is dwindling, reduced to just two models following the end of the production of the Model S and Model X and their accompanying Plaid variants. But the remaining lineup has just grown a little, figuratively and literally, with the arrival of the Model Y L in the US. The “L” at the end of that indicates that this is the long-wheelbase variant, with three rows of seating to compensate for the loss of the Model X. And following confirmation it would come to the US, it’s officially been added to the automaker’s online order platform, with pricing confirmed.

The bad news for fans hoping it would fall somewhere close to the Model Y’s base price of $39,900 will be disappointed. The Model Y L is officially the most expensive Model Y on sale in the US, with an MSRP of $61,990 in Premium spec. That’s $4,000 more than the Model Y Performance and a whopping $16,000 more than the short-wheelbase Model Y Premium RWD. The AWD Premium SWB is still $12,000 less.
Launch Series-Specific Equipment
Offsetting that price somewhat is the fact that this is marketed as the Launch Series model, which gives early buyers special bragging rights. The Launch Series will presumably be available for a limited period of time or limited production volume (Tesla hasn’t confirmed which), and includes the following value-adds:
- Launch Series interior and exterior badging
- Suede dashboard wing trim
- Floor mats
- Launch Series sill plates
- Launch series logo puddle lights
- 12 months complimentary Full Self Driving (Supervised)
- 12 months complimentary Supercharger and Premium Connectivity access
There’s no word yet on when/if a cheaper variant will be offered, but with Tesla, you can never rule it out.

As for what you get for your $61,990, the Model Y L Premium Launch Series sports six seats across three rows, with heated and ventilated seats across the first two rows, heated seats in the third, and power adjustment in varying capacities for each row. Tesla claims 89 cubic feet of trunk space with the third-row seating in place, or enough for a 20-inch and 28-inch suitcase, with room for another 20-inch suitcase in the frunk. The tailgate has been redesigned for improved visibility, but also sports a lip spoiler for improved aerodynamic efficiency.
Tesla has retuned the suspension and added staggered-width tires to cater for the additional length and weight of extra passengers, and as this is the Premium spec, you get acoustic side glass and adaptive dampers.
Tesla is a tech-first automakers, so in addition to the complimentary year of FSD Supervised, buyers can also look forward to integrated Grok Ai, a 16-inch primary infotainment screen, and two eight-inch second-row screens, plus a 19-speaker sound system.

Range And Performance
If you want the L, you have to get all-wheel drive, as Tesla doesn’t offer it with a single-motor powertrain. That gets you a circa-390-horsepower combination of front and rear motors and a range of 325 miles, with the Model Y L utilizing what was previously referred to as the Long-Range battery. And it’ll launch from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

With the Tesla Model X officially discontinued and no replacement on the horizon, the Model Y L bridges the gap for buyers who needed more space than a standard Model Y could offer. With competition in the three-row EV segment hotting up – rivals include the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Lucid Gravity – this long-wheelbase Model Y will prevent Tesla losing buyers just because they needed three rows. It also helps Tesla consolidate production costs.
But Tesla is largely trading on its fanbase being remaining loyal to the brand, as launching with a $63,000 model first puts the Model Y L at a disadvantage compared to rivals. The larger Kia EV9, for example, starts at $54,900, albeit with only 230 miles of range. But even the 305-mile EV9 Light Long Range RWD only costs $57,900.
