Volvo’s highly anticipated EX60 electric SUV is running into some unexpected trouble, and American buyers hoping to get behind the wheel may have a much longer wait than originally planned. According to a new report from Automotive News, production complications at Volvo’s Torslanda factory in Sweden are severely limiting output of the all-new 2027 Volvo EX60, with substantial U.S. deliveries potentially pushed into the second half of 2027. A small number of vehicles have already made their way stateside, but the automaker is reportedly prioritizing European customers while it works through manufacturing challenges. It’s an unfortunate development for a vehicle Volvo had been counting on to strengthen its presence in the increasingly competitive luxury electric SUV market.

The biggest problem reportedly comes down to the EX60’s advanced manufacturing technology. Volvo is introducing new megacasting and cell-to-body construction methods that are designed to reduce manufacturing costs, simplify vehicle structures, and improve overall efficiency. Unfortunately, implementing those processes has proven more complicated than expected, particularly when it comes to integrating the battery system into the vehicle’s structure. Automotive News reports that Volvo originally targeted production of approximately 2,000 EX60s per week, but actual output has been hovering around just 200 vehicles weekly. That’s only 10% of the intended production volume, creating a significant bottleneck for a vehicle that was supposed to become one of the brand’s most important new models.

The timing couldn’t be much worse for Volvo. The EX60 serves as the fully electric alternative to the hugely successful XC60, which became the company’s bestselling vehicle of all time in 2025. Volvo had reportedly hoped to sell approximately 7,000 EX60s in the United States during 2026, helping support its broader ambition of reaching 200,000 annual U.S. sales by 2030. Instead, dealers have reportedly been told that additional shipments will be extremely limited for the remainder of this year, with some previously allocated vehicles expected to arrive in early 2027. Volvo has indicated that the delays are related to production ramp-up challenges rather than concerns about vehicle quality, safety, or performance, but that distinction may offer little comfort to customers waiting for their orders.

For anyone shopping for a premium electric SUV, the EX60 remains an appealing option on paper, especially with its modern electric architecture, impressive driving range, and starting price of $58,400 before additional fees and options. However, limited availability could send impatient buyers toward competing models while Volvo works to get production back on track. The Swedish automaker has plenty riding on the EX60, particularly as it looks to expand its electric vehicle business and capitalize on the popularity of its midsize SUV lineup. If Volvo can resolve its manufacturing issues and begin delivering vehicles in meaningful numbers during 2027, the EX60 could still become an important success story. For now, though, American buyers interested in Volvo’s newest electric SUV may need to exercise a little patience.
