The Lexus NX is getting a substantial refresh for 2027, and this one goes well beyond the usual mid-cycle nip and tuck. Lexus has reworked the compact luxury SUV’s styling, redesigned much of the cabin, upgraded its chassis, and introduced its latest hybrid technology. Perhaps the biggest change for U.S. buyers is that the NX lineup will now be fully electrified, with the NX 350h hybrid and NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid taking over as the only powertrain choices. That means the turbocharged gasoline-only NX is bowing out as Lexus continues pushing more of its lineup toward electrification.
Visually, the 2027 NX keeps the familiar proportions of the current generation but looks cleaner and more modern. The front end adopts a revised interpretation of Lexus’ spindle design with a more integrated, frameless grille treatment and reshaped lighting elements. Around back, new taillights incorporate a double-L lighting signature that gives the SUV a wider appearance at night. F SPORT models turn up the aggression with unique aerodynamic pieces, black exterior accents, red brake calipers, and lightweight 20-inch wheels. It is still clearly an NX, but the details do a good job of freshening a design that was already one of the more distinctive entries in its class.
The biggest transformation is arguably inside. Lexus has introduced a completely redesigned instrument panel with a cleaner horizontal layout that places a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster alongside a standard 14-inch infotainment touchscreen. The center console and controls have also been reworked, while new hidden capacitive switches help reduce some of the visual clutter. Lexus even redesigned the steering wheel, shrinking its diameter to 14.2 inches and increasing its telescoping adjustment range. Engineers also reconsidered the driving position and pedal operation in an effort to make the NX feel more natural and comfortable from behind the wheel.
Hybrid technology receives an equally significant overhaul. Both the NX 350h and NX 450h+ receive Lexus’ latest-generation electrified powertrain hardware, including a more compact e-Axle arrangement and updated power electronics. The plug-in hybrid gets a newly developed lithium-ion battery with roughly 30 percent more capacity than before, along with increased output. Lexus says U.S. versions of the NX 450h+ should deliver more than 40 miles of manufacturer-estimated electric driving range on select grades, with official EPA figures coming later. European specifications point to more than 100 kilometers, or roughly 62 miles, under the more optimistic WLTP testing cycle, so the two figures should not be directly compared. DC fast charging is also being added to the plug-in hybrid, making it considerably more useful for owners who regularly drive electrically.
Lexus has also spent a surprising amount of effort on how the new NX drives. Body rigidity has been improved with additional reinforcement through the floor, tunnel, front structure, and suspension mounting areas. The electric power steering has been retuned, and a variable steering ratio is now used across the lineup. Lexus also revised the accelerator, brakes, suspension, and all-wheel-drive programming. Some versions receive new shock absorbers designed to react more effectively to very small suspension movements. Development work even included testing at the Nürburgring, which does not suddenly turn the NX into a track-focused SUV, but it does suggest Lexus is serious about making the refreshed model feel more composed and responsive.
Refinement remains a major part of the NX formula, and Lexus has worked on that too. Changes to the engine structure, body, and sound insulation are intended to reduce vibration and road noise while creating a quieter cabin. The latest Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 package brings upgraded driver-assistance features, while available technology includes Front Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Rear Pedestrian Detection, and Proactive Driving Assist. Higher trims can also be equipped with Lexus’ new Sensory Concierge, which coordinates ambient lighting, audio, climate settings, seat temperature, and even fragrance to create different cabin environments. It sounds a little extravagant, but features like this illustrate how fiercely luxury brands are competing to make increasingly similar SUVs feel unique.
For 2027, Lexus plans to offer the NX in Premium, Premium+, F SPORT, and Luxury grades, with both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains represented across the lineup. Front-wheel drive will be available on certain NX 350h trims, while other hybrid versions and all NX 450h+ models will use all-wheel drive. Lexus has not yet announced U.S. pricing, though more expensive technology and the move to an exclusively electrified lineup suggest the refreshed NX is unlikely to get cheaper. What is clear is that this is much more than a cosmetic update. With a thoroughly revised interior, better chassis fundamentals, additional electric range, and a stronger emphasis on hybrid power, the 2027 Lexus NX looks positioned to remain one of the more compelling choices in the crowded compact luxury SUV segment.
