Alfa Romeo finds itself in a pretty bad spot at the moment, despite having a great 2025 in terms of global sales. Things have shifted drastically this year, with third-quarter US sales plunging 65% year-over-year to just 569 vehicles. Not only that, but the latest sales report from Stellantis also showed a 52% drop year-to-date.
So, clearly, the Italian brand is in desperate need of something to revitalize public interest, and a fresh addition to its lineup might just do the trick. Alfa’s growth last year was largely attributed to the new Junior subcompact crossover, so it would make sense for the company to double-down in the hopes of turning its fortunes around.
Alfa Romeo’s US Sales Are On Life Support, But Its Fate Isn’t Yet Sealed

As you may know, the automaker revealed plans for an all-new C-segment SUV a few months ago, said to be based on the STLA Medium platform from Stellantis. It will support mild hybrid, PHEV, and fully-electric powertrains, with production due to take place in Melfi, Italy. We’ll have to be patient, though, because its official debut will only happen at the tail end of 2027.
But more interesting details about it are already emerging courtesy of a recent report from Autoblog. Speaking to Alfa Romeo Head of Product Daniele Chiari in Paris, they were told this future SUV will be adaptable for the US market. “That architecture is capable of being federalized,” said Chiari, referring to the STLA Medium platform. However, he was also quick to clarify that an eventual US launch isn’t certain at this time.

Autoblog also wanted to know how Alfa Romeo’s character will be preserved with that new STLA architecture. Chiari claims it’ll be possible thanks to specific suspension hardware, chassis calibration, and engine tuning, along with drive modes configured for that authentic Alfa experience. And, of course, design will play a key role in setting its vehicles apart inside out.
Regarding the prospect of Alfa Romeo’s new SUV coming to the States, Daniele Chiari says it won’t be easy in the age of import tariffs and high shipping costs. The company will look for ways to make it feasible despite all the challenges, but it’s simply too early for us to hope for an outright confirmation.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
Scheduled to enter production in 2028, this upcoming C-segment SUV could be a watershed moment for the Italian carmaker and its future. The Junior, although not available in the US, managed to give Alfa a much-needed sales boost last year, and it continues to do much of the heavy lifting today. For instance, it accounts for more than 60% of all Alfa Romeo vehicles sold in Europe.
If the company’s next crossover could have a similar impact while also reaching American customers, it may be precisely what Alfa needs to regain its relevance. Hypothetically, it could pair this with a production-ready Cuorerosso built in limited quantities like the Stradale, and that would most certainly get people talking.
