Jeep is reaching deep into its history for one of its most interesting special-edition Wranglers yet. The new 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A celebrates the Willys CJ-2A, the vehicle that helped transition Jeep from a wartime machine into something civilians could buy and use on farms, ranches, job sites, and eventually trails across America. Arriving as the 11th installment in Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve series, the JL-2A takes the familiar Wrangler Rubicon and adds a thoughtful collection of colors, materials, and details inspired by the civilian Jeep that debuted in 1945.
That history gives Jeep plenty of material to work with. The original CJ-2A evolved from the military Willys MB but was adapted for civilian life with features such as a tailgate, larger headlights, and the seven-slot grille that would eventually become one of the brand’s most recognizable styling elements. It was also available in some wonderfully bold color combinations, including Harvest Tan paired with Sunset Red wheels. Jeep has tapped into that personality for the modern JL-2A, including the return of Gobi exterior paint for 2027 along with colors such as ’41, Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost, and Joose, depending on configuration.
The most eye-catching touch may be the JL-2A’s exclusive 17-inch retro wheels finished in Joose, a bright color intended to recall the contrasting wheels offered on early CJ-2As. They are wrapped in standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires, while orange front and rear tow hooks continue the colorful theme. Body-color fender flares, a body-color three-piece hardtop, and Dark Metallic Grey grille accents give the Wrangler a cleaner, slightly more upscale appearance without losing the rugged look expected from a Rubicon. Underneath all the heritage styling is the serious off-road hardware that comes with the Rubicon foundation, so this is more than a cosmetic throwback.
Jeep put just as much effort into separating the JL-2A from a typical Wrangler once you climb inside. The cabin introduces a Wrangler-first combination of Heritage Tan Nappa leather, Bison Brown trim, and Desert Orange stitching that visually ties into the brightly colored wheels and tow hooks. There is also a satin-chrome Willys-Overland shifter medallion, heritage graphics incorporated into the HVAC vents, and a plaque on the rear swing gate inspired by the original CJ-2A dashboard data plate. Modern conveniences are not forgotten, with remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and Jeep’s front-facing TrailCam with an integrated washer included as standard equipment.
The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A will be available to order beginning in October with a package MSRP of $4,995. Jeep says that puts it only $115 above the price of a comparably equipped Rubicon, which could make the JL-2A especially appealing to buyers who already have their sights set on that trim. Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve program has produced everything from V8-powered specials to nostalgic appearance packages, but the JL-2A feels particularly appropriate for a brand that rarely misses an opportunity to celebrate its past. More than 80 years after the CJ-2A helped establish the civilian Jeep formula, its influence remains easy to spot in the Wrangler that carries the idea forward today.
