Budget and open road rarely appear in the same sentence when the conversation turns to cruiser motorcycles. The segment has drifted steadily upmarket over the years, with baggers and full-dress tourers — the two-wheeled equivalents of grand-touring automobiles — commanding prices that rival the cars themselves. If you want wind-in-the-visor freedom without draining your savings account, the options can feel frustratingly thin. But they exist, and some of them are genuinely excellent.

So what do you do if you dream of riding for days along deserted highways like Easy Rider but can’t justify a five-figure price tag? That’s exactly what this list is here to answer. We’ve rounded up 10 affordable used cruisers built for highway riding — bikes that will keep pace on the superslab without punishing your wallet. The usual Japanese suspects make an appearance, but there are a few welcome surprises in the mix as well.

    CFMoto CL-C

    CFMoto

The CL-C makes a compelling case on price alone. For well under $6,000 when new, you get a cruiser with a 450 cc parallel-twin engine. CFMoto has tuned it for more torque at the expense of outright power, while still carrying over the slipper clutch found on the naked and sports bike variants. The round instrument cluster is a TFT display — traditional in appearance, yet modern enough to show all the information you need. A final belt drive rounds things out and completes the cruiser experience.

    Moto Morini Calibro 650

    Moto Morini

The Moto Morini Calibro 650 is a relatively recent entrant into the middleweight cruiser segment. It is powered by a 649 cc engine that doesn’t lead the class on paper, but the Calibro 650 tops out at over 100 mph, so cruising comfortably at 75 mph is well within its abilities. Everything else is refreshingly straightforward: a double-cradle steel frame, a floating brake caliper at the front mounted on conventional forks, and dual rear shock absorbers with preload adjustment. An 18/16-inch wheel combination front and rear is wrapped in tires that are wider than the competition, which should help keep it planted on the highway.

    Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650

    Royal Enfield Super MeteorRoyal Enfield

Before the Moto Morini arrived, this was the value king of the middleweight segment. The Super Meteor 650 delivers old-school charm with modern manufacturing quality — loads of chrome and the quintessential cruiser silhouette. Its air-cooled parallel-twin engine lets it top out at around 100 mph. One of Royal Enfield’s newer generation of products, it shares its engine and key components with the INT 650 and Continental GT 650, both of which are global models. If you’re drawn to the vintage British motorcycle aesthetic, the Super Meteor 650 is a no-brainer.

    Kawasaki Vulcan S

Image of a green 2019 Kawasaki Vulcan S facing right against an outdoor background in daylight.Kawasaki

The Vulcan S is one of our favorite cruisers in the segment, and it isn’t hard to see why. It is essentially the Ninja 650/Z650 in cruiser format, and both of those motorcycles handle exceptionally well — the Vulcan S is no different. Its pricing is also strong: you get a liquid-cooled engine from Kawasaki for just a few hundred dollars more than the Super Meteor 650 (though adding ABS bumps the price further). Still, you get Kawasaki’s ‘Ergo-Fit’ system, which lets you adjust the rider triangle to suit your build and comfort preferences — a major factor in making it a capable highway companion.

    Honda Shadow Phantom

Honda Shadow Phantom coming out of an “S” curveHonda Powersports

The Shadow Phantom has earned its following by blending Japanese reliability with the distinctive throb of a narrow-angle V-twin. Being a Honda, you know it will be well-mannered and dependable. In its current form, Honda has fitted it with liquid cooling, and a rear disc brake is standard, with dual-channel ABS available as an optional extra. Honda’s own Rebel twins bracket the Shadow Phantom in the lineup and offer more value on paper, but for riders who prefer the character of a V-twin out on the open highway, the Shadow Phantom remains the pick.

    Yamaha Bolt R-Spec

Yamaha Bolt R-Spec getting ready to hit the road.Yamaha

The Bolt R-Spec has been around for a decade now, and not much has changed — nor does it need to. This Yamaha cruiser follows a concept similar to the Shadow Phantom: Japanese reliability wrapped around American styling cues. You get an air-cooled V-twin displacing nearly a liter, but it packs genuine technical interest, including ceramic-coated cylinder bores in place of traditional liners, which help it extract more power and efficiency. If you always admired the old Harley-Davidson Sportster, the Bolt R-Spec is the closest thing to it in this price bracket — and that’s high praise.

    Kawasaki Vulcan 900

The mid-range Vulcan runs a V-twin engine with belt drive, in contrast to the parallel-twin and chain drive of its smaller sibling. But like the Vulcan S, it retains liquid cooling despite wearing cooling fins that give it a vintage look — as does everything else about it. It has the proportions you’d expect if Kawasaki had designed a Fat Boy, and it wears them well. What is decidedly modern is the Uni-Trak monoshock rear suspension and telescopic front forks, both offering preload adjustment. The brakes sit somewhere in between old and new, with a single 300 mm front disc gripped by a two-piston caliper.

    Suzuki Boulevard C50T Special

    Suzuki Boulevard C50T static shotSuzuki

Suzuki’s Boulevard C50T has been around since 2001, gaining fuel injection in 2005. It had liquid cooling from the start, shared with its larger sibling, but substantial updates have been few and far between since then. You get a long-legged V-twin mated to a five-speed transmission with final shaft drive. One glaring anachronism is the rear drum brake — an area where an update is long overdue — and ABS isn’t even offered as an option. The ‘Special’ trim adds attractive seat studs and a large windshield to help knock back the wind on long highway stretches. If you want old-school character with modern reliability, the Boulevard C50T Special delivers.

    Honda Rebel 1100 DCT

Honda Rebel 1100 DCT being ridden calmly on a slightly winding road, side profile viewHonda Powersports

The Rebel 1100 is one of the best bang-for-your-buck motorcycles you can buy today. In fact, it’s the most powerful cruiser under $10,000 if you opt for the manual version. Add a couple hundred dollars to that budget, however, and you can step up to the Rebel 1100 DCT — fitted with the same dual-clutch automatic gearbox found in the Africa Twin.

That smooth-shifting transmission is a genuine asset in city traffic, and you can always choose to shift manually out on the highway when you want more engagement. Either way, you’re getting a reliable, versatile motorcycle that handles everything from the daily commute to a weekend run. If you can stretch the budget a little further, the Rebel 1100T with its fairing and hard saddlebags is well worth considering.

    Indian Scout Sixty

2021 Indian Scout Sixty StaticIndian Motorcycles

The Indian Scout Sixty is the entry-level model in the Scout lineup, distinguished from its siblings by its liter-displacement V-twin engine. Performance is respectable, and this engine rewards revving, making highway runs genuinely enjoyable. You also get a five-speed gearbox, belt drive, a cast aluminum frame, and ABS as an option.

The gauges are simple but partly digital, which is a nice touch. The accessories catalog includes heated grips, a passenger backrest, seat and footpegs, and fully adjustable Fox rear shocks, among other items — a clear signal that Indian envisions Scout Sixty owners putting in serious highway miles, even two-up.

    Engine Type

    60-degree v-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC

    Displacement

    999.6 cc

    Max Power

    78 HP @ 7,200 RPM
