German cars are often situated in the luxury segment of the automobile world. They are perceived as the best choice for performance, comfort, and engineering. In turn, they generally also cost more to produce (as well as having importation and tariffs applied), making their MSRPs higher than home-grown rivals.
The fact is that they may also cost more for repairs and maintenance, too, and German brands rarely beat ones such as Toyota and Lexus in reliability studies. So many who are looking for a German sedan for its luxury appointments and design will probably want to look at the more affordable models. That’s what we’ve done here — compiled a list of the available sedans from BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen that fall under $50,000 at checkout. There aren’t even 10 of them on sale that fit these criteria, so we looked at used models to finish off the list.
To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced directly from the manufacturers, including current pricing at the time of print. Any 0-60 mph times are sourced from available real-world road tests or the manufacturers themselves, where available. Used values courtesy of Kelley Blue Book.

2022 was the last model year for the Volkswagen Passat, leaving the Jetta as the sole sedan in the lineup thereafter, alongside the raft of crossovers and SUVs. This German sedan is still worth seeking out for its list of qualities and affordable used value today, although it doesn’t excite or offer the pizzazz of many other German barges. Built for commuters and families, the Passat excels in a different way than something like a BMW 5 Series.

Its unassuming looks inside and out are acceptable, clean-looking, and minimalist, with just the right amount of material quality for the cabin and a spacious rear. Many reviews pick up on the list of standard safety features and comfortable ride, too, which are qualities that families will be looking for, as well as the affordable price tag. The engine is a turbo-four with adequate, if underwhelming, acceleration, and there was no option of all-wheel drive, but the Passat is a great and simple workhorse.

Weaknesses
- Upscale cabin with premium tech features
- Comfortable, quiet highway ride

Sedans are on the way out, and some brands no longer offer any — Volkswagen’s lonely sedan is the Jetta, a car that isn’t as luxurious as the other brands here, but its affordability and refinement are its secret weapons. Starting at $24,000, it’s the cheapest VW on sale in the US, and the cabin offers a modern and clean look. Luxury features are available on higher trims, including ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
The Jetta GLI comports itself the way a sports sedan should. Stable and reassuring at speed, the VW accelerates crisply, corners with tenacity, and brakes resolutely.

It won’t blow away the competition from BMW and the others, but it is also cheaper than those rivals, with enough in the way of refinement to stand out in the mainstream class. The turbocharged engine offers a good amount of torque, and the automatic transmission gets the job done smoothly. It’s a similar philosophy for the chassis and suspension. A sportier GLI model with a manual gearbox option and 228 horsepower is also available.
Strengths
Weaknesses
- Excellent fuel efficiency and low operating costs
- Spacious interior for the class
- Simple, user-friendly infotainment interface

- Interior materials trail top rivals
- Limited advanced driver aids on lower trims

BMW’s 3 Series used to be the smallest member of the clan until the 1 Series came along; now the cheapest in the range is the 2 Series Gran Coupe, a compact sedan despite the name. It is not to be confused with the 2 Series Coupe. Like the Coupe, the four-door Gran Coupe comes in two flavors, the standard model and an xDrive variant. 0-60 mph comes around in 6.1 seconds for the front-wheel drive model — the platform is shared with the Mini Cooper, so there’s no rear-wheel drive here.

The crisp styling and compact proportions are anything but Mini, and there is luxury to be found with illuminated trim, a Harman Kardon Premium Sound System, the BMW ‘Digital Key Plus’, and Wireless Device Charging as standard. Another bonus is the standard adaptive M suspension. $40,000 before options is still a lot for a compact coupe, but the 2 Series sedan is striking to look at and premium inside, like a baby 3 Series.
Strengths
Weaknesses
- Sharp handling and composed dynamics
- High-quality interior with premium finishes
- Standard digital cockpit and modern tech suite
- Tight rear-seat space for adults

- Front-wheel-drive layout is less engaging than RWD rivals

Another of the babies from the German sedan universe is the Audi A3, the cheapest sedan from the brand, at around $10,000 less than the new A5. Most enthusiasts will cite the RS 3 or at least the S3 as the more exciting options, but the $40,000 A3 sedan is a great all-rounder for those looking at a compact four-door with luxury. Firstly, the 201-horsepower engine and standard all-wheel drive are competent enough for most, with the great combination of a six-second 0-60 mph time and 28 MPG combined.
2025 Audi A3, rear 3/4Audi
Audi includes features like a panoramic sunroof, LED lights, and a 12.3-inch digital cluster as standard, and the interior is attractive and classy. Some reviews mention the abundance of cheaper plastics in some places, though this is common practice with cheaper luxury models and not unique to the A3. Other downsides are a snug interior and trunk that isn’t capacious, but this is a compact model, and storage isn’t the focus. A great all-rounder in this segment with eye-catching looks to rival the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
Strengths
Weaknesses
- Refined 2.0-liter turbo engine with mild-hybrid efficiency

The 2023 BMW 5 Series sneaks in under the $50,000 barrier thanks to its used price, which is far less than the cheapest 5 Series today, now around $60,000 for the 530i. For this price, the 540i xDrive is available according to the resource Kelley Blue Book, which is all-wheel drive and offers more punch than the 530i — about 335 horsepower thanks to the inline-six under the hood. The cheaper 530i made do with a four-cylinder engine and 248 horsepower. Despite being a big and heavy luxe barge, the 2023 540i xDrive can tap on the door of 60 mph in under five seconds.

Anyone familiar with BMWs of this era will find the interior is as refined and clean as other models, and the legroom and trunk space are in a class above the smaller sedans we’ve already covered. Trunk space is about 14 cubic feet. A big German barge with many options available at the time, including LED exterior lighting, a moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, perforated simulated-leather seating, and much more.

A4 Sedan
This model has already been culled to fit in with Audi’s naming strategy that will give electric models even numbers, so the A4 has become the A5. The Audi A4’s final model year is 2025, and the most enthusiast-friendly version is the 350-horsepower S4, but it goes over the $50,000 limit. For around $41,000 today on average, a used A4 offers a decent balance of luxury, comfort, and performance. It remains subtle and sophisticated without any unnecessary stylistic aggression.

It’s a great choice today as a relatively affordable and lightly-used luxury sedan that will tick most boxes for most people — 29 MPG combined is available, and top ’45’ trim models can hit 60 mph in under five seconds. A subtle German sedan that can do it all without attracting attention.

Weaknesses

Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class is a mid-sized luxury sedan similar to the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, with comfort, refinement, and technology all included as standard, and in spades. This 2023 model fits into the $50,000 budget, and the more powerful E 450 4MATIC sedan is available for just $5,000 more than the E 350. The latter makes do with a four-cylinder engine, but the E 450 gives drivers an inline-six engine under their right foot and 362 horsepower.

That’s enough power to move this 4,500-pound barge to 60 mph in comfortably under five seconds. Standard features include heated memory seats and ambient lighting, with niceties like ventilated seats also available, as well as a wide variety of extras at cost. A new E-Class like this would have cost close to $70,000, so a model from a couple of years ago represents good value for the luxury on offer.

Weaknesses
- Inline-six with EQ Boost delivers effortless power
- Exemplary comfort and cabin quietness

- Expensive maintenance and parts costs

The iconic compact sedan that refuses to die and adapts to the times. This sedan is well-equipped, crisply styled, has an attractive cabin, and is prized for its handling, the latter of which is often a benchmark for others. There are two models available, each with all-wheel drive as an option. An M340i offers 386 horsepower and can hit 60 mph in under four seconds, but the BMW 330i is affordable enough to fit under the $50,000 limit and can still get there in about five seconds.
It’s a rock-solid, communicative, and impeccably well-balanced chassis that has helped the 3 Series win back its title of the Ultimate Driving Machine.

Its four-cylinder engine is capable of an EPA-rated 31 MPG combined, so economy isn’t terrible with this model — luxury features and technology are also a high point, and options like heated rear seats are even available for a price. Practicality isn’t forgotten either, with a decent-sized trunk (17 cubic feet) that can also be accessed by a powered lid. One of the best candidates for a sedan that can do it all and be anything you want it to be.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the model below the E-Class by size, and it is the arch nemesis of the BMW 3 Series above, even making the same power and torque figures so that neither brand can claim to be superior. Like the 3 Series, all-wheel drive is optional while rear-wheel drive is standard. For those who like details, the C 300 hits 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and is rated at up to 29 MPG combined — numbers that are close to the BMW 330i but not quite there.

Of course, most people will buy the compact exec from Mercedes-Benz for its image, comfort, and refinement, all qualities offered in abundance for its near-$50,000 price tag. Wood trims, heated seats, wireless device charging, and much more are either standard or available. The sky is the limit — or your wallet, really. Downsides (relatively speaking) are a ride that is less sporty than a 3 Series, but this stylish and capable sedan is a great luxury sedan in this competitive segment.

As we’ve already seen, the Audi A5 is the new version of the long-running nameplate that has been refreshed and swallowed the discontinued A4 in the process. It starts at just under $50,000 and is the only model in the lineup, with no coupe or convertible A5 siblings to accompany it. The high points include a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that can produce 268 horsepower with the assistance of a mild-hybrid system. 5.6 seconds is all it takes to get to 60 mph, which is about half a second slower than the 3 Series.
2025 Audi A5, rear 3/4Audi
Adaptive cruise control is standard, as well as a panoramic glass roof and four-zone automatic climate control, among other features. A more powerful S5 version is available for about $63,000, and 362 horsepower is up for grabs, which allows for a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. The standard Audi A5 is a good all-rounder just like its rivals, though, and is highly unlikely to leave buyers feeling short-changed. In fact, none of the German sedans in this list will disappoint buyers looking for a German sedan under $50,000; it’s just a question of how you want your luxury packaged.
